Summary
When Max hides out in Henry's memories, she comes across someone that is supposed to be dead: Will Byers. Will Byers, who disappeared November 6, 1983. The boy that the town buried after finding his body in the quarry. Yet, here he is.
Will helps Max escape to their world, and she sends Mike and the rest of the Party to help save Will. But El is insistent that this couldn't be all that's going on. How is this Will? And, if Will is alive, does that mean that he's being sent as a spy for Henry?
The reality is that on November 6, 1983, El made a deal with Henry. She swapped one life for another, and while she has spent her days pressed up against Mike Wheeler's side, Will has been living in absolute Hell running from monsters. She'll stop at nothing to keep people from finding out.

It seemed like no one would let themselves believe that if they wanted to live, then he, Will Byers, would have to die first. And so what? He hasn't done anything important in his life other than be an inconvenience to others. If it wasn't for him, so many people would still be living. But he could change that. Will doesn’t ask him to say it out loud. He’s afraid Mike’s mouth might settle into the same agonizing syllables it seems so used to. “Best friends?”
Will’s answer would remain the same. “Best friends.”

He’d named it a long time ago, quietly, carefully, like you label a box you don’t plan to open. It fed everything else. The hope he’d already strangled. The recognition he’d buried. The longing. The wanting. The terrible, stupid belief that some things could be mutual without being spoken. That you could be seen without asking for it. That someone could know you and still stay. Understanding.
Maybe if he killed this one, the rest would finally starve.

It doesn’t look half as bad as Dustin’s did two days ago, though you wouldn’t know it from the look on Mike’s face. His expression changes into one of utter dread and he lets out a pained gasp as if he’s one who was punched.
“What the fuck – who”, he sucks in a shuttering breath, his expression quickly morphing into one of anger, “who did this?”//

Summary
As children, their height difference had always been something that made Will’s stomach flip-flop in that familiar, weightless manner. Fluttery, before he had ever known what it meant.
Mike would never loom over him, ominous and terrifying like adults were.
Now, with a few years and a handful of growth spurts between them, the difference isn’t as obvious. If Will stood up at full length, he’d meet Mike’s eye with ease. But Will has never learned how to control himself around Mike. So he makes himself smaller, without really meaning to.

"No clue," Mike brings a hand up and traces his fingers over the dried blood, hisses when he gets close to his hairline.
Will moves like on autopilot. He crosses the small bathroom in what feels like a split second, and grabs onto Mike's wrist.
"Don't," he blurts. Pulls his hand away like he got zapped with electricity. "D- Don't.. touch it. Need to clean it."
"Right. Yeah," Mike mutters. His face does something weird, but it's gone as quickly as it comes. "Can.. Can you do it for me?"

Oh my god. Mike thinks I’m his girlfriend.
It’s like a giant universal joke. The universe is making fun of him. It’s not really funny, but… it’s actually extremely funny. Mike is confusing Will with his own girlfriend, and he’s calling him pretty. Well, that part is a little confusing, but the rest of it is very hilarious. Oh, he can’t wait to tell him this later.
A bit amused, Will smiles disbelievingly.
Mike speaks again in a contemplating tone, “You look like Will today. More than normal. Iss nice. I like it. You should look like Will more often.”
The smile from Will’s face vanishes.
What the fuck???
“I- I look like Will??” he asks stiffly.
“Yeah. More’n normal. Iss good.”
He parrots the words with no inflection. “It’s good that I look like Will all the time?”
“Yeah!” Mike says. His eyes light up, and Will almost believes that he’s doing it on purpose before his head flops inelegantly to the side.

The other boy’s earlier comment sinks in, and Will can’t help but blurt out with somewhat garbled speech, “You’re a comic nerd?”
Jake winces exaggeratedly. “Nerd is such a strong word. I don’t like to use language like that.”
“Fantasy inclined?” he jokes with a light chuckle.
“Oh, now that sounds badass.” Jake leans his head back with a smile and removes his hand from Will’s face. “Okay, I’ll take fantasy inclined.”
“Good to know,” Will says with a hearty nod and wide grin.
He's looking up at Jake when he’s startled by a touch on his back. Light but there. He lets out a tiny gasp that he’s hoping is subtle enough to not be too noticeable. He smells him before anything else.
“Hey. You weren’t at your bike.” It’s murmured against his ear. Mike’s lips almost graze him, and suddenly, Will’s ears feel on fire. Humiliating, how a small gesture can make him come undone. It's, what feels like, a knuckle pushing into his shirt enough to touch him.

“You guys saved me, Mike,” Will whispered. “You saved me. I’m okay.”
He giggled – actually giggled – when Mike leaned over and kissed Will’s cheek, the smile on his face infectious. He then rested his forehead against Will’s, feeling Will shaking slightly, and thought his mouth would fall off his face from smiling so hard as Will whispered, “I like you too.”
Mike hugged him fiercely now, Will letting out a louder laugh as he was knocked back to the floor. Mike moved so he wasn’t squishing Will, squeezing him tightly.
“You’ll go to the Snow Ball with me?” he breathed in disbelief, burying his face in Will’s shoulder. He felt Will hugging him back just as tight, nodding.
“Yes, Mike, I will,” Will mumbled. “I won’t leave your side all night.”-
Mike doesn't think through asking Will to the Snow Ball, so when Will says yes...

It's in this moment, where Will has to sit to support the weakness in his limbs and hold back tears of relief, that he knows he's truly screwed.
And so is Mike.They're all in danger, they always have been, but Mike has a target on his back that he has no idea about. He doesn't know.
Vecna knows everything. He knows how much Mike means to him and it's not a question of if but when and how something is going to happen. Will doesn't know how to convey to him the danger he's in. The danger that Will has put him in by virtue of caring too much in the wrong way.
Unfortunately, Will doesn't get the privilege of having an internal weakness. His biggest weakness is walking and talking and reckless and ridiculous and Vecna would possess Will to kill him just for the joy of breaking Will.“I don’t want to hurt you,” he admits in a low voice. It feels like a dirty confession.
“You won’t," Mike says immediately, almost affronted, and Will wants to cry harder. "Why would you-”He's going to throw up. He's going to scream. Neither are going to help, so with tears in his eyes, he decides he won't let Vecna have this.

Mike meets his eyes, blush painting his face, accompanied by a playful frown. “No, I don't really want to.”
