He’s regretting being bare-chested. Or rather, feather-chested. He smiles at his pun.
“Hmm. I think you’re just stubborn.” Avery leans against the tree trunk. “You talk so much that I should take care of myself, you forget to take care of yourself too. You looked like you could faint any second back there!”

To have emotional needs would be to distract from that which makes him special; to express these in desperation would be to ask for punishment or ostracisation. The world has been encouraged to misunderstand him at every turn, but the expectations for him to accommodate everyone else have never lessened.

Three months after the New Year, Avery is trying his best to move on and keep living his life. He really is. That is, until he finds that the World that should no longer exist isn't done with him, and he gets the opportunity to try and be better. Again, and again, and again.
He knows he's walking into a trap. But he knew that the first time, too, and id it didn't stop him back then, it sure as hell isn't stopping him now.
With his future– and the future of the entire world– hanging on his ability to maneuver both Derek's self-sacrificial tendencies and the King's manipulations, he just has to hope that given infinite attempts, his ability to hinge everything on a last-minute solution will be enough to pay the favor back.
Somewhere not too far from him, a forgotten book resurfaces.

Looking up, he sees that the top of the pole stretches out to illuminate the road, and he steps out without checking for traffic, thinking of nothing but standing in the light. He hears only the whistle of the cars in the distance. If he just stays here, it won’t even take 12 hours. Eventually, something very, very bad will come.
For once in Avery's life, everything went right. Derek lived through the impossible events of New Year's Eve and is now safe in his apartment, and has been for the past two weeks. It's an incredible stroke of luck.
But every action has an equal and opposite reaction, and Avery is waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Avery has been waiting for nineteen minutes, and it's raining, and that one song is stuck in his head and the only reason he's not more annoyed is because there's a little shelter over the bus stop for days like this, so he's not getting wet. Which is nice. Still kind of chilly, though.
The bus is seventeen minutes late.
The next one isn't due for another forty-three minutes and he doesn't want to wait that long, but there's no way he's walking the half hour it would take to get back to his dorm in the rain. Waiting will take more time, sure, but it's not worth it to get soaked.
No, he'll just. Keep waiting.
"Give it twenty-two more minutes," someone says, sitting down next to him, and Avery startles.
