Ilya rummaged around, looking for anything that might bring Shane comfort: old clothes, stuffed animals, things they could’ve eventually given their kid. As he scanned the dresser drawer, forcing tears away, he heard Shane’s door creaking open. He turned to see Yuna holding a small, grey piece of fabric.
“We were going to give you two this closer to the birth…” she spoke softly, holding out the blanket, offering it to Ilya.
He would’ve recognized it anywhere: Shane’s baby blanket. He’d seen it in countless baby pictures as a scarf, or a lasso, or a cape. He knew Shane would’ve kept their baby’s blanket; he’d probably give it back to them when they were having a child of their own, just like Yuna. Ilya mourned the love this baby would never receive– David’s food they’d never try, Yuna’s leftures they’d never hear, Shane’s freckles they wouldn’t inherit.
Or, at ten weeks pregnant, Shane has a miscarriage. He and Ilya experience a new first: grief, together.

Summary
The once crisp lines separating Ilya from the ‘man in the greysuit’ burned. Ilya became something holy, something hallowed Shane was willing to devote himself to. He wanted to know everything: if he was right or left-handed, if he smoked menthols or milds, what his blood tasted like, what his tattoos meant. Shane wanted to experience Ilya. He wanted to memorize the things he’d try to hide, disgusting secrets kept between him and god. He wanted to know every scar, and mole, and freckle by name. He wanted to know every heartbreak, wanted a list of names to hunt. He was sure he could mend the broken boy that lived inside. If he could figure him out, he could fix him just as easily; Ilya was Shane’s puzzle to solve.
Or, Shane is an assassin and Ilya is a private detective. They're both obsessed.

It had been getting bad for weeks, but it’s hard to admit when it's so subtle. It morphs from a shitty mood to a bad day to an unlucky spell. Then all at once you’re underwater, unable to pry yourself from your bed, salt dried on your cheeks, head, and heart, somehow a thousand pounds.
Or, Shane helps Ilya through the beginning of a depressive episode.

“You said that before, when you questioned me. Was that apology a lie?” he asks. Then, he adds, his voice a little lower, “Should I start to think of you as a liar, Mr. Hollander?”
Again, Shane shakes his head and feels like a stupid little doll for how often he’s doing it. “No, no, I’m sorry. I swear. I’m just nervous.”
Dr. Rozanov hums. “I have a feeling you spend a lot of your time provoking men, Mr. Hollander,” he notes neutrally.
