“And what do you think of it all?” Emmrich probed, fiddling with a ring box in one of his pockets. A small thing, really, but it would’ve made a nice addition to any of Johanna’s dexterous fingers. Encouraged by the regalia they had used to adorn the dead earlier, Emmrich pinned his hopes that such a befitting gift would catch Johanna’s eye, just as a fresh corpse attracted a curious wisp.
“Of what, Volkarin? Oh. This fool's gambit? It sickens me.”
“The festivities or the actual act of showing affection?” The box burned against his fingertips.
“Love. A mere distraction, at best. Why, pray tell, must there be a day dedicated to it? Of all our sentiments? A waste of effort. Think of all the other things this cursed city could be doing than honouring love. Love! Pah. It is one addiction I want no part of.”

Summary
In Treviso, the coffee is strong, the stars are bright, and ziplines dot the rooftops. While familiar enough with the mechanism itself, Emmrich is less familiar, if at all, with the technique of using one. Typically, when he accompanies Rook to Treviso, they use the streets.
His companions do not hesitate; Lucanis expertly hops onto the line bare seconds after reaching it, and Emmrich watches him zip across. He lands catlike (Crowlike, perhaps?) on his feet, and then he’s standing at the edge of the adjacent rooftop tapping his foot. Rook throws her hands over her head, tiptoeing up to grab the handlebar as it flies. Emmrich watches her teeter on the edge with something like awe, and something else like dread.
“I’ll catch you,” Rook tells him with a wink, swinging herself to gain momentum. “Just don’t look down.”Rook, Emmrich has noticed, has trouble keeping her hands to herself--and he certainly has not asked her to. It all comes to a head on a Treviso rooftop, where their burgeoning relationship finds a new foothold under Antivan stars.

Emmrich is fallible, and Rook- she brings him to his knees, eager to vie for her attention like he was a hungry dog. Maybe he is, he thinks- he’s loyal, exceedingly so. He can be softer, in those tender moments when he forgets all the heartache. He’d be a good companion- eager to heel at her touch and follow her into the darkest catacombs for a glimpse of the way her eyes soften right before she laughs at one of his jokes. He thinks of honeyed moments from a life that he dare not spend too long on- moments with a crackling hearth and a warm hand upon his nape, soft fingers undoing his tie-pin and dragging him in by his vest for a saccharine kiss.
