enjin turns cold, seeing zanka like this, flustered and wide-eyed with blood dripping down his nose and obvious tears that he’d been trying to fight back and frantically wipe at with his other arm. he doesn’t even have to guess at what zanka is feeling, knows that a torturous loop affirming his own inferiority is playing endlessly in his frazzled mind.

There’s that familiarity, sure, needing to be close to one’s mentor; Enjin knows all about that. But there’s always that sweetness around him, something that draws people in almost unknowingly, has Rudo walking a bit closer to Zanka, or Follo pressing into him in a friendly way when he’s seated next to Zanka in the cafeteria. A momentary reprieve from the stench. Enjin watches them, taking a long drag of his cigarette.

In fact, the wall by his desk is filled with drawings of him as he does the most mundane things: hanging clothes, cleaning his bike, watering the succulents in that weird plant stand he owns… everyday things that Riki can only ever hope to be a part of.
But one night changes everything when he wakes up in a dream to Jake inside his apartment, staring at the sketches, and asks him:

Jaeyun. Sunghoon mouths the word. The word seems to want to be in his mouth, and once it is in his mouth, it sits there cozy and warm.
“Jaeyun?” He says it out loud, the name, and he gets no response. The body is fully unconscious now but still breathing. Sunghoon looks at him, at Jaeyun, and he understands that there’s no one else here, that there’s no boat that has come in, no shipwreck.
I cannot leave this here, he thinks. I cannot leave this here, and I cannot bring any other person near it, because if anyone else came near it I don’t know what would happen, what they would do, and I do not want to know.
And then there is another thought underneath all of these. This washed up onto my sand. This is for me.
Or: For six years, the sea has been Park Sunghoon’s only company. Then she gives him Jaeyun.

Summary
Three strikes and he’s out.
It’s how this should work. If Enjin were a better man. If he didn’t just convince himself that all of FEMA’s warning signs are total bullshit. Who is he to condemn this boy to certain death over something that could be chalked up to a headache and some basic dental? He’s getting rusty. Or, soft. All it takes is a pitiful look and pretty face, and here he is ignoring basic Post-Cataclysm Survival 101.
Enjin pinches at the bridge of his nose. He’s only half convinced by the decision he settles on. It’s a gamble. Lucky for Zanka, it’s one he’s willing to take.
“It’s gettin’ a little packed in here, so you’ll have to bunk with me. That alright?”
“Huh?”Zanka looks up in utter disbelief.
“You heard me — you can stay.”
