Summary
For a suspended, surreal second, the Spanish clay is July-grass green. The spray of crushed brick underfoot is a wisp of white lifted off the grass—titanium dioxide, a groundskeeper told Jannik once, painted on with a transfer wheel every morning. It’s Wimbledon, and Carlos is falling.
Jannik hears a muted thump.
He watches the ball connect with Carlos’s outstretched racket. Soft hands, a deft change of grip, and every ounce of pace melts from the ball. It bounces off Carlos’s strings, sails just over the net, and lands mere inches inside the opponent’s court. An impossible shot.
Championship point.
Jannik hears the clatter of Carlos’s racket dropping to the ground. But it must only be in his head, because the crowd is rising, roaring, all around him.

Summary
Jannik doesn't open his eyes. The tip of his nose disappears under the edge of the sheet as he settles again, his breath going long and steady, each slow exhale catching for a second in the back of his throat.
Carlos can't look away from him.
Jannik has freckles on his eyelids. Carlos hadn't known that, before.

Summary
Jannik hits a clean shot, a lashing forehand that lands the ball deep in the ad court, grazing the line and lifting a wisp of white off the grass. The kick of the topspin dizzies the ball into the air. Carlos, out of position, jumps and lunges toward it, throwing all of his weight forward.
Jannik can tell he’s going to miss. He’s already turning to his team, one fist raised, when the ball whizzes past Carlos’s outstretched racket.
He doesn’t see Carlos land. He doesn’t see him collapse into the dirt.
He hears a crack, like a heavy tree branch, snapping in a windstorm.
He only looks back when Carlos starts screaming.

Summary
Eddie should’ve closed the window.
They’d opened it the night before, letting cool air sweep through the house while they slept. Now, late morning heat saturated the room. Sweat gathered at the nape of Eddie’s neck, wetting the ends of her hair. Dripping tendrils curled around her ears, clinging to her skin.
Her hand was soaked, too—fingers and palm and around to the back of it.
A thought occurred to her. Lifting her hand, Eddie pressed the pads of her index and middle fingers to her thumb. She rubbed them together and felt the raised ridges catch.
Like sitting in bathwater too long, her fingertips were pruned from Buck’s cunt.
The absurdity of the comparison made Eddie smile.

Summary
People didn’t…touch Henry.
He was a rule of etiquette, not to be breached. He was a mother of pearl caviar spoon, held aloft between two discerning fingers, a fussy little utensil with a set of rules so as not to impart any undesirable flavor upon the roe.
But Alex had never liked caviar, and he cared fuck all that Henry was a prince.
Or, four times Alex touched Henry.

Summary
“Ilya, what are we gonna do?” Shane says.
Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.
“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.
Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.
They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

Summary
Shane doesn’t know how to grocery shop for two. He doesn’t know how to do any of this, really. He’s keenly aware that this was the longest stretch of time he’d be spending alone with Ilya, with any one person ever, outside of his parents.
In a way, it feels like playing house, unpacking the groceries and setting out a set of towels and washcloths for him. It is playing house. This is what it might feel like, to be able to have him all the time. The thought feels impossible to contemplate, terrifying to dwell on for longer than a minute or two at a time.
