Alternatively, my take on the Jock!Ilya x Nerd!Shane trope bc it is desperately underrepresented.

“They were touching you,” Ilya says without looking back, aiming for the same neutral, quiet tone.
“They were trying for you,” Hollander says. “It’s my job to intervene.”
Ilya can’t stop thinking about the hand. Ilya can’t stop the hot thing in his chest from spreading, uglily, through his torso.

“Why did you want me to meet you here today?” Shane asked. When he’d heard the request, he’d had the same thought as Jared. Was he trying to rub it in? One last chance to retaliate for a long ago rejection?
Shane had almost made it to Rozanov’s room that night in the hotel in Toronto. But when the elevator doors opened, Shane’s feet had stayed glued to the ground.
He’d been so afraid of ruining everything, only to have it ruined for him barely a year later.
Shane does not hook up with Ilya in Toronto. Six years later, his hockey career is long over and he has found a new calling that puts his media training, and his pretty face, to good use.
Consider this a remix of sorts.
