Bookmarker's Notes
This was both wonderful and difficult to read. Wonderful because it shows the beautiful struggles of being underappreciated and feeling left out and left behind and forgotten and powering through it all despite the terrible bumps along the road, and difficult because of, honestly, the exact same reasons.
We're used to reading stories that simplify relationships to the bare bones of what we want to see, and even though whump and hurt/comfort and angst are popular tags and tropes, few authors get into the complex and heartbreaking nitty-gritty of people simply being people. No villains. No face-slapping. No clean cuts or tidy endings. Just the effort and labour of life, darling and imperfect as it is. So hard to capture in written work.
Yet this author did so with so much grace and skill, and I'm really grateful to them for this piece! I almost quit reading it a couple times because it was so hard to see Soap struggling so realistically and deeply, which may not sound like a compliment, but it 100% is. I want stories about people. Sure, I read fics for the blorbos, but I'm a huge literature nerd in general, and this was an absolute gem of a work.
A fave for the ages. <3<3<3

Summary
Soap paused, picking up the pen. He looked over his list. Three columns, “yes”, “no”, and “maybe”. He pulled the paper close. Hesitating, he underlined a single item, then crossed out the rest of them one by one. When he finished, he looked back at Ghost, as if daring him to say something about it. When Ghost didn’t, Soap pushed the paper over, crossing his arms over his chest.
Underlined was “kneeling” under “yes”, the only thing left on the page. It didn’t matter what the other “yes” items had been, they were very clearly in the “no” column now.
Ghost forced himself not to feel frustrated, had to admit to himself that Soap might be the most challenging sub he had ever had assigned into one of his units.

One arm, because that’s all he needs to take Kaveh’s weight. He’s such a show off for a man whose ass never grew in. “Fuck’s sake,” Kaveh mutters to himself.
