“Come on,” she calls for David. They head back to the car - nondescript, cheap. Reliable enough for their purposes and unlikely to stand out. Not that they need much from it - it’s kept parked in the shed by the jetty mostly year-round.
Every six months, Bell makes a trip to the mainland. Despite her efforts to live as independently as possible - hunting her own meat, growing her own roots and greens and stocking on wood to keep her furnace warm - didn’t negate the necessity of the invaluable services of the nearby town.

Her mouth dries.
She numbs herself, and easily loses track of the time that follows, barely feeling it pass at all. It’s easy to refuse to think about certain things - like where Russell is, or trying to piece together a puzzle with pieces she can’t see.

Stitch, the large man that he is, had never filled the apartment quite like Russell does now. Had never made Bell feel ever so claustrophobic, so small all at once. He sticks out in her home, his presence souring her space like it had her mind.
She doesn’t know how Adler found them.
It doesn’t matter, she supposes. What matters is the child that clings onto her tightly, his head buried in the crook of her neck as her heart hammers painfully in her chest, her stomach hollow at her complete loss for words.
