Summary
Enjin can’t help but look at Rudo, yet as hard as he tries he cannot muster an ounce of pity. No, the only thing that Enjin can still feel is a very solid sense of pride.
Because despite all that, Rudo is a good kid. Rough around the edges, too full of all-consuming rage ready to devour him and everything in the world. Yet under all that sand-paper personality and hurt lay a genuine desire to understand, to connect, to build.

It is not the unlikely scenario of Rudo losing a fight that is making Amo’s chest feel heavy and her lungs to painfully implode, leaving her unable to breathe.
It’s his eyes. It’s the man’s bulgy, creepy eyes.
Because that man is looking at Rudo the same way “mister” used to look at Amo not so long ago.
Now that she has seen the difference she understands. She understands now because Gris and Enjin and Bro Santa and Augute never look at Rudo,Riyo, Dear or Eshia the way “mister” used to look at Amo.
None of them look at Amo like that.

It’s a learning process, trying to acclimate to the Ground’s customs when all Rudo has ever known is the culture in the sky. It’s a learning process the other way around, too. The Cleaners want to know about him as much as he them.
It’s also a learning process trying to navigate it all without Regto. Somehow, the memories of his dad are still everywhere, even now. All he can ever do now is hold on to them and try to stay afloat.
