Summary
He had stood at the frosted window of his childhood home in Moscow, breathless and small, and watched beautiful birds fly straight into high-voltage power lines. He had seen birds so young, so incandescent with potential, put their entire lives on hold to raise two sons. He knew exactly what happened to birds who got tangled in that endless, sprawling freedom. Their wings caught fire under the crushing pressure, their beaks locked open in a silent, endless scream of guilt.
Shane could have it all. He could feel it all, without the fire. Ilya would make sure of this. He would tear the sky down and build a cage so small and perfect that Shane would never have to fly again.
