She turned back to Jack. “I must have misunderstood. When you asked to bring an important friend with you, I’d taken that to mean you had a new woman in your life.”
Jack could almost hear the quotes around “important friend” and flushed, glad he couldn’t see Robby’s reaction to his mother’s declaration.
