His mouth quirks. He lets out a breath. In the voice of a child who has more wit in that bald head than is entirely proper, he says, “You are rather grown to be losing children.”
“Egg,” Duncan hisses. “Beg pardon, m’lady. He ought not say such things.”
“No harm done.” You lift a hand once to stay him. Then, to the boy: “‘Tis not my child that got lost. I have none.”
“And why is that?”
“Seven hells, Egg—” Duncan mutters, reddening under the dirt. -

“Aye!” And there he loses hold of himself. You are ungrateful. Half-naked, saved by him, and ungrateful, speaking to him as if he were some dog that had fouled your shoe. The fever seems to have passed its worst work, but you are still witless. Weak too. Your chest heaves unevenly and your thighs tremble beneath you as if anger alone is keeping you upright. Duncan knows trembling thighs on a woman from other times, and the thought sickens him with its own untimeliness. After it comes one of Ser Arlan’s old lessons on what a man does with insolent little things such as yourself. Before the hand he imagines can fall and meet flesh bent over the knee, his voice raises instead, full-force, and he’s spitting onto his own face. “That bastard hauled your boots off, found you walking on a foot black as rot, cooled your skin, changed your shirt, and sat by whilst you sweated half the fever out. You are standing right in his way. Duncan breathes out hard through his nose. “Don’t push me, girl,” he mutters, and bends. Then, his arms go round the backs of your thighs and he swings you over his shoulder.
“Duncan!” you yelp. Bat your funny little fists against his back and kick one foot so hard your slipper falls off. “Dunk, my shoe! Bloody hell, put me down!”
“That’s what y’get for bein’ stubborn,” he says, giving the backs of your thighs one firm settling pat as he walks on.
You keep fighting him, but you laugh all the way through it, bent over his shoulder and kicking your remaining slippered foot at the air. “What has got into you?”
“You. Apparently.”

At first she thought it was only the time that changed. maybe she was dragged back into the 14th century in some fever dream. Something her brain cooked up in the split second between when she flew through the car’s windshield and when her skull hit the concrete.
But earth didn’t have dragons. It didn’t have a place called Westeros, it had pigeons instead of ravens carrying letters, it had spring and fall, it had no Dorne or Wall, as far as she knew.
She didn’t remember how she got here. Maybe it was punishment for something she did back in her own world, however far away that might be.
Hopefully it was bad enough to actually deserve this shit, because if it wasn’t, she was going to write a strongly worded letter to Hell’s management as a long winded way to ask one question;
