He told Will what he wanted, let Will see that soft part of him that was allowed to be cared for, told Will he loved him unprompted, while Will had had to choke on the words so many times before he could get them out, no matter how badly he wanted to say them. Mack had thrown the doors to himself open for Will, even though it had been so much harder for Will to do the same."
Will surprises Mack for his birthday, and somehow that becomes a reason for Will to realize he can want things.

“Hey, hey, sorry I was at practice,” Will placates, heart already hammering. “What’s wrong?” He can feel the knot of worry twist in his stomach when Gabe inhales sharply on the other end of the line.
“It’s–” Gabe’s cut off by a sound on the other end of the line, something crossed between a whimper and a groan.
Will and Leno have been toeing the line between just friends and something more since juniors, will this be the wake up call Will needs to finally get his feelings in order?
