Summary
This has been, without a doubt, one of the weirdest and most wonderful days of Ilya Rozanov’s whole entire life. This morning, he woke up alone in his bed in Boston, and now he’s ending the day standing awkwardly in the bedroom of Shane Hollander’s “fortress of solitude” in some random fucking Ontario forest, watching through the bathroom doorway as his… lover, maybe?… gets ready for bed.

“Do you, um,” Ilya says, trying his damnedest to remind himself that this is nothing like their ill-fated sleepover last fall, and he can, in fact, be normal about this, “do you have particular side of the bed you like to sleep on?”

Bood is right about the fines, but Ilya’s worst habit is that he just can’t stop digging his own grave. Voronin is so goddamn smug, and Comeau is smirking like he’s punched Ilya in the face with his own championship ring; Ilya can’t help but want to make things worse.
Ilya yanks himself free of Bood and skates closer to the Voyageurs. He tilts his lips away from the cameras before he speaks. “I know you think you are Montreal’s new Shane Hollander, karlusha,” he whispers, “but you do not need to fuck me, too.”
Voronin shoves him away with a laugh. “I would rather be Montreal’s Shane Hollander than Shane Hollander’s Lily.”
And suddenly, Ilya knows why Comeau’s words were so familiar.
He drops his gloves and breaks the rookie’s perfect little teeth.

“I had a cigarette,” Ilya admits in a guilty rush. “You don’t like the smoke. I was—trying to get it out before you came. And then you were here, and I—”
And then Shane was here, and any hope of thinking about absolutely anything else had vanished into the chill of the night air. But he can’t say this, can’t say that the world narrows to a fine point when Hollander enters a room, that Ilya can finally fucking get in air when all he has to do is touch Shane like breathing and not carry Cups and build legacies and grin and bear it for cameras and share a last name and an ankle-weight of a country with his father.
“Sorry,” Ilya tells him again, hating the way his voice trembles.
