It wasn't often that the Port Mafia was quiet.
However, not truly quiet. There was always the distant hum of generators, the low murmur of voices behind closed doors, the occasional echo of footsteps in the long corridors—but it was quieter than usual. The kind of quiet that sank into the very walls of the building, giving the impression of something just slightly off.
In the corner at their desk, Gin Akutagawa sat, shoulders tense with every tick of the clock on the wall. The second hand dragged more than it moved, each click sharp enough to feel rather than hear. Their pen rested untouched between their fingers, hovering just above a half-finished report they had already rewritten twice.
The Port Mafia was in a stalemate—the Armed Detective Agency had been leaving them alone for the most part, the Guild had been dealt with, Fyodor was in prison. All was well. It didn't change the life of paranoia Gin led. Anything could happen—at any point.
Instead, all Gin felt was on edge, as if the period in between the crises and assignments was simply the calm before the storm. And all they could do was wait and wait.
