Summary
Mitch Marner is playing the best hockey of his life. He is one win away from the Stanley Cup, the favorite for the Conn Smythe trophy, and for the first time in a long time, hockey is fun again.
So of course, this can't last.
The phrases are so familiar that for a moment they don't sound like threats at all. They sound like headlines, call-in shows, comments he learned years ago not to read but always seemed to absorb anyway. Overpaid. Selfish. Soft. Not built for this. The old reflexive shame stirs before he can suppress it, absurd and immediate, as though he is once again twenty-two years old and trying to explain to an entire country that he is trying as hard as he knows how.
He takes a step backward. The man reaches into his jacket.
Mitch's mind splinters into practical fragments. He should find security. He should run. He should yell.
"Hey," he says, raising one hand. "Listen, man–"
"If you couldn't win for Toronto," the man says, and there is something heartbreakingly sincere in his voice, as if he is the injured party here. "You don't get to win anywhere."

That got Paul’s attention. “What? What do you mean?”
“Mitch, your jersey. Why does the blue look gold?”

He finds it almost immediately,

He doesn’t click the article, he has a good idea of what those photos look like.
He declines a call from Connor fucking McDavid.

Summary
Rogers Arena is cold in a way Prudential Center never is. It leaves a chill on Luke's skin, makes the hair on his arms and at the nape of his neck stand on end.
It's downright freezing when Luke catches a glimpse of the white 43 on the player's shoulder, in stark contrast to the Canuck Blue of their jersey, in even starker contrast to the blood soaking into the fabric where they lay unmoving on the ice.

Playing in the NHL always carries risks. Luke keeps seeing red in his nightmares after Quinn gets hurt during a game. It's up to Jack and Petey to pick up the pieces.
