“Hey, look at me. You alright?” Gale pressed, moving closer, standing between his legs and cupping his face in his hands. He went to nod, but the gesture turned into a shake. When he opened his eyes, he found Gale gazing at him with shiny, concerned eyes.
“No,” he finally managed, hot tears streaming down his cheeks despite his efforts to hold them back.
Or Post-war, Gale has been sent to another base in another city for a few months and John is not dealing well with his absence. It all comes to a head when one of John’s trainees almost crashes.

Summary
Sunset cannons. The boom of it sends a flock of crows cawing and rustling out of the trees overhead. Gale wishes it would scare the geese making a muck of his nice, neat cemetery so easily, but alas. He’ll just have to get more creative with his methods, but that’s a problem for the morning.
Much softer and closer at hand, footsteps approach almost silently over densely layered pine needles and scattered twigs, and Gale looks up from the magazine he’s not really bothering to read so he can watch his own personal miracle emerge from wherever he goes when they’re not together, a vision dressed casually in jeans and a t-shirt. He is, of course, already yapping, picking up the same thread they’d left on last night right at dusk when he’d disappeared again as usual.

“It’ll be fun,” Marge says to him over the phone as he’s unpacking another box in his tiny, studio apartment. “I’ve been to a few other classes, it’s a good environment.”
“It doesn’t sound like my sort of environment, Marge,” Gale says, picking up an astrophysics textbook that pushes the bounds of what a single-handed grip is capable of. It strains the tendons in his wrist as he tries not to drop it on the way to its new home in the built-in bookshelf. The edges of it are bloated, almost rubbery with how many times it’s been painted over in the same shade of white, a few spots chipped away to show rich brown wood underneath.
“Your sort of environment is on a hill with a telescope, with nobody around.”
