Summary
She doesn’t know how many seconds pass in silence as the whole room waits for a response, but by the time she snaps out of it, he’s up from his stool and striding towards her. Her lips part uselessly as she clambers for some semblance of an explanation, but he’s in front of her before she can find the words, his hand settling at her lower back with a fondness that belies his hostility.
“Class goes for an hour, honey, remember?” Rio drawls, his tone perfectly controlled even as it drips with condescension. He nods politely at the instructor then, his fingers digging into Beth's back through the thick material of her coat as he presses his chest to her shoulder, subtly urging her through the archway. “’Scuse us for a minute.”・・・
After three weeks with no word from Rio following their disastrous business meeting, Beth decides to take matters into her own hands—by tracking down his art class and crashing it.

Summary
“Need a favor,” Rio says a moment later, his eyes settling back on her as if to gauge her reaction. Beth suppresses the urge to make a retort or refuse altogether, knowing that despite the tentative cease-fire they’ve been maintaining for the past few weeks, he still has a short fuse when it comes to her, and she still has a long road ahead of her before she’s back in his good graces.
“What kind of favor?” She prompts, her tone tepid as she eyes him warily.
“Got a meetin’ up North tomorrow night. You comin’ with.”・・・
Rio takes advantage of a business opportunity by bringing Beth along to pitch her product. When the meeting goes sideways and Beth gets hurt, the tension between them finally comes to a head.

Summary
“Elizabeth,” he tries again, unable to mask his frustration as it bleeds into his tone, but it’s like he hasn’t even spoken because she’s shoving at him again, more forcefully this time, and it’s like a switch has been flipped in him as he captures her hand mid-push. He spins them, backing her up against the brick wall of the building, and she steels her arm in the same moment that she meets his dark gaze.
He slowly lowers her hand from his chest, squeezing it once in warning as he grits out, “Don’t.”・・・
Rio finds Beth drinking at the bar they first hooked up in and decides to crash her melancholy outing. Snark, tension, and brutal honesty ensue.

Summary
“Shame all my teachin’ had to go to waste,” he clucks, newly disinterested as he levels his gaze with hers again, and she expects him to smile again — expects him to grab hold of the knife in her chest and twist it just to hear her cry out — but he doesn’t. His expression is almost solemn — the corners of his mouth turned down and his eyes carefully blank as if the inadvertent truth behind his words has just dawned on him, as if he truly thinks of her as wasted potential — and she feels the gash in her chest tear along every seam in her, the heavy weight of her grief and guilt and fear pouring out at his feet.
She just breaks.・・・
Haunted, restless, and desperately seeking solace, Beth visits Annie at her work in the middle of the night. When Rio finds her there, she confronts him. Turns out neither of them have gotten any better at controlling their impulses.

Summary
It seems like a lifetime ago that he’d regarded her with intrigue rather than vigilance. Now, they’re wounded, inside and out, and he’s certain that no amount of stitches could ever make them whole again. There’s no going back to the way things were; nothing left between them that either are capable of salvaging.
・・・
When Rio returns to give Beth what she's owed, he finds something unexpected on her fridge among her children's artwork.

Rio yanks on the ponytail. Like a lot.
Technically a prequal to Nine-Tenths but can definitely be read alone.

Summary
It thunders in the night, lapping at the docks, making the wood of the ships atop its surface wheeze and creak. But no, that’s imagined, she thinks. She couldn’t hear the ships from here, couldn’t know the men aboard them, but in her minds eye perhaps she sees them. Not huddled in cabins or in flimsy beds among the steerage. They’ll be in town tonight, re-firming their feet on dry land before they slip their sea legs back on in the morrow.
