The sedge has withered from the lake,

D3rlord3 barely escapes the clutches of The King, his sanity scarcely intact. Avery finds him, determined to help him with only a fishing pole, D-grade potions and a dream.
The only complaint he has is that the King doesn't pay rent and just takes up space in their world. And that he likes being alive and happy. And by that, he means: NOT getting haunted by a Lovecraftian entity that can't decide if it wants to be a literature play or a character, but one thing's for sure is that it's keen on corrupting him as well.

Derlord knew that somewhere in the future, there would be another victim of The King in Yellow. Derlord wouldn’t let The King in Yellow win after all of his efforts and struggles. After that glimpse of the future, all he could do was warn the next name written in it and hope that Avery would be smart enough not to fall for The King in Yellow’s manipulation. What Derlord didn’t see beyond the gate was that he would meet Avery some years later.

Summary
Avery brings Derek dinner.
Closing his eyes, Avery makes a wish and combines the wet and dry ingredients. With each stir, as the mixture thickens, he wishes for Derek to get better. He imagines the allspice and cinnamon like winter-scented steam rising from a hot bath to draw the stiff ache from his muscles; the cumin warming his bones; the turmeric clearing the pressure out of his sinuses and lifting the weighted haze from his mind. Avery adds a dash of honey and thinks of sweetness, of taking Derek outside in the sunshine somehow, wrapping him in a blanket and turning his face to the wind and sky. It is the closest thing to magic that exists in a world of science and gods. He cooks as an act of devotion, willing Derek back to health by the spoonful.

He feels himself dropping down further, but instead of falling again, he is lifted off the ground and held against Avery’s chest.

Inherent kindness did not exist. Not as far as Derek was concerned. As the crown prince of the Empire of Quelen, people were never kind to him unless they wanted something.
People were either sycophantic damn near to the point of insulting, or as rude as possible while leaving room for plausible deniability. They hated or loved him for the crown, he was not a living being as far as they were concerned.
That is what he believed until Avery waltzed right into his life and sat down and refused to leave, not that he wanted him to leave.

"Nuh uh uh." Avery stuck his hand in Derek's face to wag his finger at him. Derek just scrunched his nose. "Buddy, trust me, you are the root of it all. You are why I'm here."
"That's…" Derek took in a shaky breath, deliberately and slowly letting it out. This was a fact Avery made obvious from the beginning, yet it was one he did not understand at all. "What do you mean by that?"
"It means," and oh, Avery is taking his hands now, grinning quite fondly, and the way the starlight glow washes over his proud expression makes it all look quite hazy, "my desire to save you broke the universe."
or: Derek and Avery get their sleepover. Derek has questions. Avery has very confusing, rambly answers. Derek considers it debatably awful exposition.
