James leans forward, looking him intently in the eyes to let him know that he is listening. Sirius can't bear it. He stares into his hands and spits the words out of his mouth before he has time to second guess it.
"My mum is poisoning me."
For a while he can only hear James's breathing hitch. They both wait quietly for Sirius to say something, to undo the confession, but he can't.

When he takes a week-long position at the Black & Sons sheep farm to help out during lambing season, he ends up finding a kindred spirit in the farmer's son. There in the great outdoors, the gathering Appalachian dark, Sirius invents a new game they've not yet played. The rules are clean-cut. Regulus catches on quickly because he's smart and because he trusts implicitly that Sirius knows best.
"It's called Grim Reaper." Sirius barks out a laugh, beckoning Reg in close. "Grim for short."
Regulus hmms and rubs at his bare feet.
"You run," Sirius lifts his two long, teenage, knobby fingers and flicks them back and forth like a set of miniature pumping legs. "If I catch you, you have to kill yourself."
"For real?" Reg deadpans.
Sirius is so idiotically endeared by the sarcasm that he ducks his face to disguise his grin. "No, you stupid idiot. Not really. Just pretend."
“Oh.” A dutiful pause. “Okay.”
