Ilya considers himself a reasonable man. Sure, one might say he’s more obsessed with Shane than is strictly healthy, but it’d be more unreasonable if he had the king of hockey in his bed (and in his heart) and he wasn’t obsessed. Still, he’d like to think that he’s above becoming jealous of fictional characters. And he is above it. Of course he is. It would have been one thing if Shane had told Ilya about his childhood crush on Anakin Skywalker at the beginning of May, when they had a summer-long stretch of lazy weekends at the cottage and busy days at the Irina Foundation and warm bright mornings where Ilya gets to watch Shane wake up in his arms.
But it’s late September, and Ilya’s mad at everything.

It slips out; he doesn’t mean to say it. Shane can tell from the way Ilya’s face contorts, almost like he’s trying to take it back - like he’s trying to un-say Shane’s name, un-learn the taste of it in his mouth. But it’s out there now, hovering in the space between them. Heavy, despite its fragility.

"Fuck," Shane breathes, his voice already sounding hoarse. "I didn't think—"
He clenches his hands, unclenches them, shakes them out—as if somehow he can shake off the heat building beneath his skin. Obviously it doesn't work. He tips his head back against the closed door, and that doesn't work either. All it does is expose the line of his throat, and something in him wants to whimper for Ilya to bite him.
Or, Shane starts going into heat a day early. Luckily, Ilya's there to help him.
