“HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PAPI!” Tallulah signed, bouncing on her feet before springing towards the bed. Wilbur let out a startled laugh as she collided into him. He rocked to the side and wrapped his arms around her.
In the doorway, Phil sent them an apologetic look. “Sorry, I tried to get them to wait but they were so excited.”
In his hands, a tray was precariously balancing a cup and a small cloche that hid the plate from view. Peeking out behind Phil’s legs was Chayanne, who had slapped one of their hands over his eyes. He awkwardly held out his hands to sign, taking care to keep his eyes glued to the floor.
“You two aren’t kissing, are you?”
Quackity snorted and sat up, pulling Tallulah to sit in his lap. “No, there's no kissing happening. You can look.”

“I mean… yeah, let’s go with that in case this ends up on the news,” Siren shrugged, looking back at Tommy. “I kidnapped you, right?”
“Yeah, sure,” Tommy agreed, knowing that if they said he was kidnapped, it would keep people from getting suspicious of why he was seen in public with Siren. “Anyway, can I get the chicken nuggets happy meal, with a coke?”

Quackity winced. “I know.” He paused again. “I get that you can’t trust me with Tallulah. I wouldn’t trust myself either. But I hope you know I do, like, genuinely care about her. And I’d never do anything to hurt her.”
“I know, Quackity. But you’re reckless. You get so caught up in your own ideas that I’d be worried about Tallulah becoming collateral damage. I think you’re a good person, Quackity. I really do. But I’m always going to protect my daughter first and foremost.”
Another flinch. Before Quackity could respond though, Wilbur continued with,
“That doesn’t mean we can’t spend time together though.”
Wilbur comes back from his tour. He and Quackity come to an understanding.

Summary
Grief is a funny thing. The heavy, tangled up knot that you don't remember swallowing. Something dark and bitter that climbs back up your throat every so often just to remind you that it's there. Some people got good at biting it back. Some people got to wash it down with lemonade and laughter and friends to fall back on. Some even learned how to let it come. To let the knot past their lips and untie it. Some people were only passing companions with grief, but others were worse.
Quackity and Charlie were worse.
Over a year since his daughter died and Quackity was regretting his career choices. All the bitterness he brought with him to school now. All the misdirected anger towards parents; mornings drowning the smell of alcohol in gum and cologne. He was a sorry sight, as was Charlie. Charlie, who was living in Quackity's basement because he couldn't face his husband (or himself). Charlie, who hadn't managed a job since paying for their kids' funerals. Charlie, who was probably going to kill himself one of these days if they weren't careful. So, yeah. Some people were worse.
Enter a new school year, hot parents, and a very determined husband trying to teach these two that grief doesn't have to be forever.
