Summary
Madeleine is the sole heir of House Madeleine, who has held an iron grip over the Crème Republic’s elite since his ancestors, along with many refugees, fled the collapsing Vanilla Kingdom. Though their hold remained unbothered, a recent attempt on his life has forced Madeleine to take his family’s business much more seriously.
Espresso lives in an apartment in the Crème Republic, getting by with his roommate and best friend since childhood Seaweed and his adoptive child Strawberry Crepe. Espresso works part-time as a researcher and a bartender, but with his ambitious research goals, he required funding fast, so he turned toward loans that were too good to be true.
One night, after Espresso was desperate to secure money to pay his portion of rent, Vampire jokingly suggested he could give Espresso money as long as he slept with his boss, Madeleine. After that night, neither could stop thinking of the other. Madeleine wanted nothing more than to call Espresso his love, while Espresso didn’t want to become dependent over payments for sex requests, despite his growing affections for Madeleine. But, Espresso is further plunged into the underground, organized crime ring the further he involves himself with Madeleine.

“I’d like to marry for love, but I’m too well known here to be able to. All the fathers just want to sell their daughters , so I don’t know that I’ll ever get a woman that has interest in me. What about you, on marriage?”
Johnny hadn’t thought about that. His main focus was in the moment, enjoying the time he was spending with his friend.

Every third week of spring there was a full moon that rose over the starry sky of the Creme Republic, and every year the illustrious Paladin Academy had their annual Banquet of Divine Light.
It was a grand event for the alumni of the paladin class; a beautiful evening of fine dining and nostalgic conversation. Madeleine Cookie himself had gone every year since his graduation, minus the time he spent searching for the Soul Jam. It had been one of the few things he had so dreamed of as a child, especially with how his mother spoke of it like a fairytale.
Only one thing would make the night even better.

He could hardly make anything out amongst the screaming and fleeing Cookies, except - A demon. An angel? Tall as the rafters, wicked grinned, moving tentacles grabbing for flesh, glowing eyes and violently thrashing - There was no time. That Beast would not be defeated by him alone, he must scan for anyone trapped and escape himself. There were bodies under him. Dough was beginning to… Melt? As though it had never been baked at all, how could that be? They were alive just minutes ago. There was no crumbling, they were just… husks. Husks of women, elderly, children, so many children, oh Divines -

"Espresso," Madeleine mumbled his name, pulling him into a hug. "Espresso, Espresso, Espresso." Head over shoulder, tilted to the side so to hear his racing heart. Oh, how he wanted this. How he's wanted to hug Espresso all this time, to be close and play, for their talk to be so much more—only to be held back by his own state of mind, that it would ruin everything, it would ruin their public image, the both of them, and everything would go away. It was his greatest fear and greatest hurdle. "You mean so much to me. You're worth all of the sweets and flowers and gifts on the holidays. You're so important."
Espresso stiffened against him, his breaths going shallow and quick. His heart was beating so fast, so strongly that it betrayed his liveliness. It took more than a few moments to reply, but the way his hand reaffirmed its place in Madeleine's hair, slowly combing through and joining warmly with the back of his neck, was more than enough of a response.
"Madeleine... I think I'm in love with you," Espresso admitted softly, a strange sort of tightness in his voice.
Madeleine accidentally bumps one of Espresso's shelves and gets a potion on him.
This changes everything.
