    Summary

The first time Pepper, Rhodey and the Avengers each meet Peter; each at a different stage in Tony and Peter's relationship.

Pepper: She was definitely curious about Peter Parker. There was something in Tony’s eyes when he talked about the kid that Pepper didn’t think she’d ever seen in Tony’s eyes before. She had no idea what it was or what it meant, but it ignited her interest.

Rhodey: He could pretend it was because he missed his friends- which wasn’t a lie. But more than anything, Rhodey was hoping for a chance to (officially) meet Peter Parker. Tony had mentioned nonchalantly that he was “looking out” for the young superhero, but it was Pepper who had spilled the full beans.

The Avengers: Tony was different now. Quieter, more settled. And Steve was sure there were more reasons behind this change than the diamond ring on Pepper’s left hand. He just didn’t know what.

    Summary

“Nobody choked me, I’m not hurt,” Peter grumbled, though his chest tightened even more at the effort of speaking. It was really getting hard to breathe, now— reminiscent of his days of asthma attacks as a child. “I just… I stopped for a drink. This lady gave me hot chocolate, and—”

“Wait, hold up. A random person gave you something, and you drank it? Never take candy from strangers, never take drinks from strangers— do kids these days not get lectures on stranger danger or—”

“She was a nice old lady, Mr. Stark,” Peter interrupted, leaning his head on the vent as his neck grew heavier. “She wasn’t gonna poison me.” Was she? Now that he thought about it, the cocoa had tasted a little funny. “She even offered me cookies.”

“Ah, well, if cookies were involved, that obviously makes her trustworthy,” Tony deadpanned. “What’s next, a handwritten invitation to her van? Geez, kid.”

Or: While patrolling as Spider-Man on Christmas Eve, Peter accepts hot chocolate from a little old lady in an attempt to warm up. Said hot chocolate had peppermint. We all know the story of how that goes...

    Summary

Peter often wondered about the atomic bomb.

More than most teenagers should, probably. Though most teenagers weren’t vigilantes either. In any event, his wonderings had nothing to do with his extracurriculars. It was only tangentially related, in the way he seemed to be able to detonate his entire life in seconds, in an exorbitantly bright and colorful manner.

The thing was, an atomic bomb didn’t start with the explosion, although everyone always focused on that bit. Humans always did have a fascination with things that killed them, and from a humanitarian perspective, the damage was what was important. But coming from a more chemical perspective, the explosion was almost incidental.

The real danger was in the preparation, in the way two things that were stable on their own could be forced together under exactly the right — or wrong — conditions. Not inherently volatile, nor doomed from the start, but close enough and aligned until a reaction became inevitable.

    –-

OR: Peter nearly dies, goes into a coma, wakes up, and then gets himself into a hostage situation, all while Tony is acting strangely distant. It is, objectively, not a good month for him.

    Summary

There’s a field trip. A fucking field trip, to Stark Industries, where Peter has had a fake internship for half a year now, and everything that Peter has been pretending is about to go up in smoke, because Mr. Stark hasn’t been speaking to him for ages—

Ned is ecstatic. “We’re gonna get to see your internship,” he crows, excitement brighter than Sirius in the sky.

Flash is laughing. “We’re gonna get to watch Penis Parker faceplant when we all see, once and for all, that he’s lying about that internship of his."

MJ is flipping Flash the bird, and Betty is scribbling away in her notebook for the newspaper, and Mr. Harrington is pulling Peter aside when the bell rings to say that he’s heard the rumors, Peter, and it doesn’t do good to the school’s reputation to lie about an internship when they’re in Stark Industries, and the building is collapsing again, concrete dust filling Peter’s lungs, and he can’t do this. Not this afternoon. Not the blindingly yellow field trip permission slip, not talking to Aunt May about getting permission to go to a building that he's supposed to have been going to for months, not the possibility of happening to cross paths with the superhero that took away his suit.

    Summary

“I found something in the bathroom,” Will bows his head a little, hands on his knees. “Some kinda magazine.”

    Mike stills.

It’s subtle. Would’ve gone unnoticed to anyone but Will.

Mike’s shoulder draws back just slightly, as if bracing for impact.

“What kind of magazine?” he asks, aiming for casual. He almost hits the mark.

Will watches him too closely, their thighs brushing on the blanket-strewn mattress.

“Not Playboy,” Will says, quieter now. “At least… I don’t think so.”

A small beat encompasses the two. Mike nods slowly, taking in this information a little too factually.

“Were you digging through the drawers or something?”

There it is. A little too quick, defensive maybe.

“I… I wasn’t digging,” Will says, maybe a little too quick. Then softer, “I was looking for a spare towel.”

The cicadas outside seem louder suddenly. The hum of the house presses in around them. Mike looks past Will, towards the stairs, like someone might materialize and overhear.

    Will hates the instinct.

“It’s not mine,” Mike says, voice quiet, eyes narrowed.

    “I didn’t say it was.”
