It's all good and well for most everyone involved until the day of the marriage comes-- only for Wei Wuxian to have the most eventful wedding night in world history, learn that he shares a considerable connection to his new wife in their love of science and research, and accidentally discover an interesting new application of the spiritual lingzhi mushroom.
(Or; grandmaster-of-demonic-cultivation Wei Wuxian and let's-transfer-golden-cores Wen Qing get married politically and completely platonically, which goes about as well as could have been expected, in hindsight.)

The man lowers his arms back into his lap. His dark eyes reflect strangely in the light of Yue Qi's cupped handful of energy.
"Don't you know? Aiyah, what are they teaching you young cultivators these days?" he muses. "Little one, this is my prison."
Yes, Yue Qi had been concerned the man would say something like that.
"Who are you?" Yue Qi asks. Perhaps more importantly: "What are you?"
This gains him a quick flash of a smile, not smothered well enough to hide the hint of fang poking out of it. "That's the question, isn't it? But you can call me Shen Yuan."

Summary
Wei Wuxian remembers his past lives. He does not know why, and has lost count of how many times he's been reborn, but he remembers every single time he has had to watch his loved ones die.
Or rather, watch them be killed.
Hunting a faceless, immortal enemy through the centuries changes a person. Sharing a common hatred can turn your worst enemies into your strongest allies. When Wei Wuxian finds Xue Yang once more, beaten and bloodied and with the light of recognition in his eyes, they know that yet another cycle is starting.
