Summary
Shane could hear the crowd, loud as always in their home barn. It felt electric tonight. He didn't usually let the emotions of the occasion affect him, but after 22 years in the MLH, having accomplished everything he could do as a professional, tonight’s send-off was too much to push all the way down into that small compartment where he could hide all he felt.
But Ilya–Shane felt physical pain in his chest every time he allowed himself to think his name. Their careers still forever tied together until Ilya’s retirement a few years ago. In the quietest of times, Shane could admit he shouldn’t have felt lonely at the top because Ilya was always right there with him. Sometimes he took solace in that, sometimes it brought pain so blinding he couldn’t breathe.

It doesn't bother Shane. Really, it's not that big of a deal. Yes, Ilya and Svetlana used to sleep together, but they're just friends now. Shane knows that Ilya loves him. He isn't worried. Really. It's just that when they're sitting that close and whispering inside jokes to one another, it's hard to forget the way Ilya had once said, "I could marry Svetlana," like that was an acceptable option for him. Really, though. It's fine... Shane can make it one week with Svetlana in their home. Really.

“I don't know about you guys. I'm having a date after the game.” He sighs.
“Another one of those blind dates J.J. and Hayden keep trying to set you up with?” Ilya snickers. “And who is the lucky girl this time?” He asks, mockingly.
“It's not a girl,” Shane replies.
The hands caressing him stop moving. Shane looks at him, curious as Ilya turns his gaze slowly at Shane, unblinkingly. He seems completely serious, in a way Shane hasn't seen before, not even when they're playing hockey.
“What?” Ilya finally asks.

Shane groaned and walked to the living room where he dropped down in the armchair beside the couch. “No, it’s not a crisis.” He glared at Jackie. “There’s a guy in our lecture that keeps looking at me, but when I make eye contact with him, he just smirks and looks away.”
“You didn’t tell me he was smirking, Shane!” Jackie gasped from her spot on the arm of the couch. “Oh, he totally wants you!”
Shane glared at her, “Again, no he doesn’t. Looking at me and smirking when we make eye contact does not mean he wants me.”
“Yes, it does,” J.J. and Hayden chimed in at the exact same time. They both chuckled and glanced at each other before fist-bumping.
“Whatever,” Shane stood, “I’m not talking about this anymore. I have work to do on that research paper for lab on Friday. Jackie?”

OR: Shane is a university student who keeps catching his classmate staring at him during lecture. Of course he's in denial about what that means.
