Summary
I’ve found myself dwelling, in many of my idle moments since that first encounter, on the memory of the man I’d known as Marc. That night I can only look back on with a strange sense of intimacy, despite it all. I was burdened by shackle and chain, without wand or weapon, on the floor of a cage. Surrounded, indeed, by monsters. Though I had found myself in situations far more dire in the past, the gnawing deep within my blood left me with desperate pangs of urgency, even as I lay too feeble to move, only partly conscious on a chill metal floor. But when he first called that name, “Rigel,” I looked to him and found familiarity in his eyes. Brown eyes so deeply rich one more inclined to flights of romance might consider drowning in them, as the saying goes. He was fair of feature, his shortly cut hair a brunette with striking strands of gold so paradoxically subtle one might think them an illusion. He reached out to me, then, and by the chin tilted my head to meet his gaze. The faintest smile was the last I saw, before slipping again into the haze of anemic faintness.

Summary
"Sometimes,” Bel said, “I think that only I know what a wicked creature you truly are, Sophy."
Christmas Eve, 1812: the Annual West Wycombe Soirée. The rooms are hot, the games tiresome, and the men utterly objectionable. Any discerning young lady would prefer the company of a friend to such a crowd, particularly when said friend is the most striking and spirited girl in the entire county. There is nothing so remarkable about that. Right? Right?!

Summary
"Being obliging is not enough to guarantee your success, Miss Walker. My daughter is an invalid. She cannot walk, as you see, and she requires the use of a Bath chair to move about the house and grounds. She has the help of two lady’s maids, of course, but still, her companion must push the chair, fetch her things, remember her tonics, read to her when her eyes are tired, help her in and out of carriages. It is a physically taxing role, to say nothing in the social responsibility. I am away from Brookings Park for long stretches, and you will be Lady Araminta’s primary society until she marries.”

Summary
Grace Ashcroft was trapped in a wildly outdated hospital filled with ridiculous puzzles and zombies that for some godforsaken reason still seemed to retain some of their personality from before their turning.
All of that was, quite frankly, almost too much. She really was pretty impressed it had taken so long for her to have one of her freak-outs. What had ended up being the straw that broke the camel’s back was this: Grace had found herself unable to shoot a pretty zombie.

Summary
"Kurt Cobain shoots himself and Richard Nixon dies within weeks of each other. Oddly, it's Nixon she finds herself feeling sorry for, imagining him all shriveled out and shrunken the way dying people are, old and alone.
She tells Beth that but she doesn't seem particularly sympathetic.
“People get what they deserve,” she replies with her typically ominous seriousness, flipping through the news channels.
Not necessarily, Rachel thinks, but she doesn't say it."
Beth and Rachel, ten years later. 1994
