She slammed her eyes shut to stop the overflowing of tears – what useless thing it was, her current inability to control her emotions – she choked, “Oh.”
Her son looked into her eyes, a glimmer of… something.
Do not hope, she scolded herself. Hope is a fickle little thing and –

Jessica has found that the thought processes of a child are much more difficult to parse than those of an adult. The leaps in logic, the enduring belief in fantasies, the misapprehension of subjects far beyond their years. She can see now that Paul is greatly aggrieved and greatly determined. She does not know what has caused this upset. She studies his traveling supplies and says, "I see. Is that why you've packed us honey cake?"
"Yes!" Her son beams. "There's one slice for me and one slice for you! I think, if we eat slowly, we shall be able to make it last for days."
"They are very generous slices," concedes Jessica. "Have you informed your father of our plans?"
At this mention of his father, Paul's face darkens into a ferocious little scowl. "But it is because of him that we are leaving!"

"This entire time?" The duke presses the back of his hand to her forehead. He is checking her temperature—checking for fever.
Swallowing, Jessica raises her arm and points to her island, the size of a thumbnail in the distance. Out of the corner of her eye she sees the duke's men pause and follow her gesture.
"Goddamn," says Gurney Halleck.
Duke Leto laughs in disbelief, though there is no humor in his voice, only incredulity. "There—you swam all the way there? God! Why? You could have—there was no one here to—"
Jessica stares at the duke for long moment. She considers the worry that lines his face, how absolutely frazzled he appears. She decides to tell him the truth.
"Because I could," she says, earnestly. "Because I wanted to, more than anything." She does not say: I have not wanted before Caladan. I was not taught to want.

Paul says, "Ouch?" and Jessica understands that it is both a statement and a question. Her son realizes she's been injured but wonders if she's in pain.
Still smiling, intent on showing him how a duke-to-be should act, Jessica nods and replies, voice soft, "Ouch."
Paul's chubby little face takes on an expression of determination that is so much like Leto's that she laughs in surprise. Her son leans toward her, presses his face to her shoulder, and goes, "Mwah!" then looks expectantly at her.
A kiss! Jessica gazes at him in wonder and astonishment. He's imitating her—when she kisses him to soothe small cuts and bruises. Little creature that he is—still learning to form words, legs still not steady enough to walk, and yet he knows—wants—to provide her aid and comfort, to alleviate her pain.
