Summary
It isn't until Nie Mingjue wakes up in the Burial Mounds after a night-hunt gone awry, that he realizes just how wrong the Cultivation World is about the Yiling Patriarch, Wei Wuxian.
There is no "Ghost Army," just biding their time until the right moment to strike. Just a group of Wen Remnants trying to survive on land that was never suited for life. There is no "Demon of the Burial Mounds," just Wei Wuxian, trying his best to keep his new family alive while nearly starving himself in the process.
Nie Mingjue thought he knew everything. Merely days ago he thought that sieging the Burial Mounds was the safest option if given a reason to do so. But meeting the Wen Remnants, and A-Yuan who affectionately calls him "Green-gege!" he realizes something vital.
He was wrong, and he better do something to fix it before it's too late.

Summary
Modern cultivator, Wei Wuxian, dies in a train crash and is sent back in time to the period of Ancient China he had been writing his thesis on - transmigrated into his own body as a child, dying on the streets of Yiling. He has no money, no family, but a knowledge of modern cultivation and of the historical events that are about to unfold.
He recalls the recently-unearthed journal of a woman who was imprisoned in Cloud Recesses against her will, and decides that she’s a good place to start to find someone who might be willing to help him dismantle the corruption that had sent the Cultivation World into the Dark Ages so long ago.
Of course, he had no idea that the person he sought would be the mother of Hanguang-Jun, the object of Wei Wuxian's fascination (“obsession,” his friend had corrected), since he had first learned of his existence in the ancient texts he'd studied.

Summary
The Cloud Recesses Guest Lectures were held every three years for disciples between the ages of fifteen and eighteen. They had three purposes.
The first (and the reason it was hosted by the Lan) was to provide a shared baseline understanding of the core cultivation topics that underpinned every sect while not divulging clan-specific approaches.
The second was to create opportunities for friendships and alliances that would reduce the chance of war between the clans.
The third, and most important, was for the clans to replenish their bloodline by finding compatible mates with strong cultivation skills. In the last month of the lectures, challenges to test compatibility could be issued.
Wei Wuxian challenges Lan Wangji, sure that they are compatible mates. The Lan refuse to allow the Challenge.
They come to regret it.

Objectively she wasn't wrong about that. His eyes stung. It was different for him though. Four years ago he stayed in the Cloud Recesses for the guest lectures and was thrown out by Lan Qiren in the end. How would he survive living there?
Or: Wei Wuxian marries into the Lan Sect expecting to be miserable but slowly learns to make it and the people of the Lan Sect his home. And maybe he'll even get to keep it for once.
