Aunt Abigail would be proud to see how far Ofjames has come. Her Commander admires her. Her Mistress tolerates her. Ofjames is a pious, obedient Handmaid. Or, that is how she needs Gilead to see her in order to survive.
Yes, her Commander admires her... but to an unholy extent. To a damning extent. Mrs Whitford allows her to remain in the household because her husband threatened her otherwise. As Ofjames glorified herself and lived in luxury before, the Lord saw it fit to give her a like measure of torment and mourning, since in her heart she says, "I sit as a queen, and mourning I shall never see."
Ofjames mourns for a life past and inaccessible. But will that past be inaccessible forever?
