This work is the prequel to Debts of Honor, it is entirely Viktor POV, it takes place from August to June of his year studying abroad, and this means it is unresolved angst. (Resolution takes place in Debts of Honor.) It is slightly, but not entirely, canonical.

Summary
The Enterprise has been tasked with convincing an alien race to join the Federation, but Jim isn't having much luck persuading them. When they insist that a ritual to reveal one's true self is the only way to gain their trust, Leonard volunteers. It's better than watching Jim or Spock risk themselves, but he could never have predicted the consequences.
OR
Leonard gets high on an alien ritual drink, has to suffer through withdrawal on the shuttle ride home, and then, to make matters even worse, has to apologize to Spock.
