“Oh, I just thought I’d say hello,” she said lightly, holding her ground.
“Really,” Gortash said flatly. His dark eyes bore into her. Still, he had reined in his temper enough that a gut feeling prompted Ta’av to mischief.
“You did say I could return to talk,” she said with a grin. “I thought you’d be happier to see me.”
“Hmm.” His gaze slid over her, and then he stepped in so close to her that Ta’av took a step back without thinking. “You thought you’d say hello,” he repeated. “And you’ve handcuffed your hands behind your back, why? To save me the time it would take to do it myself?"
His small smirk made Ta’av’s stomach flip, and she realized she might have gravely miscalculated the danger she faced.

One second, she was moving, fighting, thinking—maybe screaming—and the next, nothing. Just fragments of pain, gnawing and blunt, the kind that didn’t care about timing or logic. Bits of herself showed up in flashes: her body aching in places she didn’t even know could hurt, her head pounding with a rhythm that didn’t match any music she’d ever heard, and the occasional echo of someone screaming her name. That someone, apparently, wasn’t in the room.
