Summary
Prologue: The secrets of the Playtime Company are deep-seated in the earth. Experimentations, torture, coercion and murder were everyday occurrences. It took the Hour of Joy to end one horror and replace it with another. Death became the only true Salvation, the only true Freedom. But they say sometimes a place so rooted in darkness, fear and pain can bring the attention of greater forces to it; and something out there in the universe decided a long time ago that second chances at a good life was well deserved.
Summary: When DogDay died after being taken over by the mini-Critters, he thought that was the end. But he was surprised when he opened his eyes again to a new world, so familiar to the one he was trapped in, but also so much freer and safer. It's a world where the children of Playtime Co were given a second chance to live, without the tortures of their previous lives. As more characters join their new world, tendrils from the old one reaches in and threatens to destroy their lives once more. It is up for the tortured souls of Playtime to make another stand against the forces that threaten their happiness and peace.

Shuichi smiles slightly, leaning against the wall and looking up at the ceiling. "Don't let me stop you. I'm just here because..." what's an acceptable reason? The truth? That's probably the only acceptable reason. "I haven't really gotten to see you for a couple weeks. I don't need to talk, or anything. Just sitting is okay."
Eyes widening a fraction, Rantaro seems as though he's almost going to say something in response to the admission. But then he seems to decide against it, biting his lip with a smile and shaking his head.

Summary
Fantastic, Shuichi thinks, suppressing the urge to roll his eyes. He honestly doesn’t mean to be cynical, but long elevator rides aren’t his favourite thing. They’re usually awkward, and his class has sixteen people, plus Chisa, their homeroom teacher, the tour guide, and Kiyotaka Ishimaru, who came along as a chaperone of sorts. In favour of avoiding Ishimaru’s scorn, he pops his other earbud from his ear and tucks them into his pocket, shaking his head to try to clear some of the fogginess from his mind in preparation for the long ride.
Before they can move, though, Rantaro speaks up, and of course Shuichi listens. “Hey, would it be alright if I took the stairs?”

Shuichi is having a hard time figuring out where he and Rantaro stand with each other. Things only get more complicated when he inadvertently figures out a secret of Rantaro's: He's claustrophobic.

Summary
He’s not… upset, per se, that Rantaro isn’t here today. Not in the way that Kaede thought he would be, at least. Dates and special occasions mean a lot to Shuichi in theory but he’s never been the type to get caught up on specifics. Would drive himself crazy if he was, dating someone like Rantaro. He doesn’t mind when things are a little off center, just a bit imprecise, so long as they happen eventually. And as much as Rantaro is easily distracted, and even a bit of an airhead at times, he’s not unreliable. He comes through in the end.
(Just late, sometimes. Oftentimes. It’s alright. Shuichi has plenty of experience with tardiness.)
It doesn’t even bother him seeing his peers celebrating the holiday together.

Rantaro is out of town on Valentine's Day. That part is fine by Shuichi. There are other things that aren't.

“Oh, umm,” Shuichi takes his pencil from his mouth—Kaito’s gaze lingers on his chapped lips for a moment too long—and sits up straight. “Well, it was—”
The door to the library suddenly bursts open. Kaito and Shuichi turn in unison and watch as their classmate Kokichi, trailed by Gonta, storms inside.
“Momota-chan! I have a proposition for you!” he announces, voice much too loud for the library. He’s hushed immediately by the librarian, and in return, Kokichi giggles, winking at the poor woman before he skips up to where Kaito and Shuichi are seated. “I want to organise a trade. My minion for your minion. Whaddya say?”
“A—” Kaito sputters. “A trade? What does that mean?”
Kokichi blinks. “What, were you born with a part of your brain missing?”

All at once, Shuichi moves. He pivots on his heel and gapes, quite obviously, at the man he just passed. As though sensing eyes on him, the stranger pauses in turn, glancing over his shoulder.
He’s younger than the one Shuichi convicted. Eyes a lighter shade. But the way the light catches in them, just for a moment—
Hit with a sudden wave of vertigo, Shuichi swivels back around and takes off running down the block. If the stranger says anything, Shuichi doesn’t hear it. Not past the painful throb of his chest, the sharp ache in his temples from the pounding in his ears. He crosses the street without looking for traffic and cuts across his neighbour’s lawn to his uncle’s house, where he ducks under the railing and takes the stairs two at a time. His hands tremble violently as he grabs for his keys, but he manages to get the door unlocked and slam it shut behind him, breaths ragged as they come in and out.

Shuichi has an encounter with someone who reminds him of the case that changed his life. In the aftermath, he calls Rantaro, and Rantaro answers.

Summary
All Shuichi sees is eyes. Eyes are everywhere. Judging and attentive, piercing and critical, staring at him intensely and unstoppably, watching him trying to have fun like everyone else with undeniable pity. Wherever he goes, whatever he does – everybody’s staring, and it’s heavy. Each glance feels like a pile of sticky dirt thrown at him, gets glued like old gum to his hair, skin, clothes. Shuichi brushes it off again and again, but it never ends.
