Summary
The thought of never solving this and being stuck like this haunted them everyday. Day? Could it even be called a day? Does it even matter? No. They just couldn't take it anymore. There was literally no way out. The thought made tears spring to their eyes, and once they started, they couldn't quiet their sobs. They weren't getting up. They'd lay here until the damn supernova would happen. They just wanted a break.
Somehow, despite what felt like endless repeats of this same awakening, the fact that Slate was sitting only a campfire away managed to slip their mind. Only realizing this fact when they heard said Hearthian's voice.
“... Hatchling? You doing okay over there?"

What would it be like to actually live through a time loop, dying and watching your friends die, seeing everything you’ve ever known and loved destroyed, and then coming back to a timeline where none of that ever happened but will happen again? How would the hatchling react in such a situation? How would it be being alone at the end of the universe, trapped watching its demise for eternity just after reaching what you’ve wanted your whole life?

“No, ‘pole-brain, I mean why do we have to do this? This is supposed to be Slate’s job.”
Hal thinks for a moment and says “Well, this is Charnock’s house.”
You shoot a questioning look over your shoulder, bringing your flashlight beam around just enough to see Hal’s face. The lack of electric lights in this house was starting to get annoying. Hal’s eyes narrow.
“Charnock keeps their stuff here? Slate probably got sick of Charnock messing with them.”
----Hatchling and Hal are sent to get some supplies for Hornfels from Charnock's attic, the village's local kooky puppeteer. I swear they will not get pranked and definitely will not hear a tragic story.
