Summary
Malachite and Hal didn’t fight often. Sure, they had little squabbles here and there, but rarely anything that boiled over into a full-on fight that lasted for more than a day. But when they did, Malachite found they could bring a bowl of soup to their friend to show they were there to make peace and then explain themself.
Sure, it worked when they were younger, but Malachite isn’t sure it’ll work now. They’re willing to try anything at this point, though, so what do they have to lose? (Their best friend, possibly. And all because they said something dumb.)

Malachite and Hal have a few bumps in the road after the Loops end. Malachite was never good with words, so they decide to use a tactic that never failed them when they were younger. (Stars, they really hoped it wouldn’t fail them now.)

A voice startles them enough that they let out a yelp.
The sound of their closest friend laughing under their breath makes their own hitch.

Summary
Riley was never sure of what the building Playtime Co. used had going on. Even when they were interning there. But, a planned to be ‘quick visit’ in and out after receiving a letter telling them everyone was still there turns into a long game of chase with monsters still left in the building. And along with realizing the gory horrors Playtime had hiding just under the surface, they learn that they cannot die. Whether through some supernatural force or their mind being their worst enemy.
Seems there was a lot more down here than they anticipated.

Riley dies and comes back. This happens many times. And it’s added to the ever-growing list of things to figure out in the deep bowls of the factory.

Riley took a step back, as if challenging DogDay—no—this thing in the dark to approach the light. To approach them.
“Angel,” the nickname felt wrong from the creature. “I swear it’s me!”
“Say. My. Name.” They demanded again. “I’ve told you my name—Say. It.”
Why were they arguing? It was obvious this wasn’t him. Maybe they were just hoping it was. That he would say something. Anything.The thing in the dark did not reply.

After talking to him some, they piece together quickly that the thing in the dark is not DogDay.

Quartzite dies. And then they die again. Over and over they die, the loop running its course and dragging them to hell and back each time. Nobody believes them. Nobody knows.

What would it be like to actually live through a time loop, dying and watching your friends die, seeing everything you’ve ever known and loved destroyed, and then coming back to a timeline where none of that ever happened but will happen again? How would the hatchling react in such a situation? How would it be being alone at the end of the universe, trapped watching its demise for eternity just after reaching what you’ve wanted your whole life?
