Before Felix could remove his headphones, he heard it. Heavy, borderline panicked breaths. Felix realized that it must be Hollander. His mic was not turned off when he left the interview. Footsteps. And then a door opening and closing. They had filmed the interview that morning at the offices of the Irina Foundation. It sounded like maybe he had gone into his office.
“Hey, what is it? What is wrong?” Another voice. Unmistakable anywhere. Even if Felix hadn’t spent weeks now listening to it, he would still have recognized Ilya Rozanov’s voice.

What if the filmmaker making the documentary about Hollander and Rozanov discovered the truth about their relationship. So he approaches Shane and Ilya about filming them over the course of the 2020/2021 season to create an honest documentary that tells the true story of their lives. “Well, they had pretty good steak, but I don’t know if they’d have anything you would like,” Hayden says, and kicks off his shoes. He falls onto his bed with a contented sigh, then looks over at Shane, who hasn’t said anything yet. “Shane? You good?”
Shane means to say he’s fine, but what comes out instead is: “Rose is having a baby.”
Hayden sits up abruptly.
“Whoa,” he says. “You’re serious?”
“Yeah,” says Shane. “She just called me. She took three tests.”
“Been there, brother,” says Hayden, his eyes wide. Shane puts his head in his hands again.

A few weeks after Rose and Shane split up, Rose discovers that she's pregnant. Overwhelmed by the prospect of fatherhood, Shane puts off confronting Ilya about his feelings, and they never hook up at the All-Stars Game. They find their way back to each other anyway.

Summary
Ilya Rozanov has been drafted by Boston, the number one pick overall, but his father doesn't want him moving to America and so takes steps to block his visa. He's going to have to go back to Russia and stay there forever and that, thinks Shane Hollander, is wrong.
It's so wrong that Shane can't stop himself from doing something about it. Even though that something is the most reckless, the only reckless thing he's ever done in his life. He marries Rozanov in secret, to keep him out of Russia and put him on a path to Canadian citizenship.
Shane's got a five-year plan to get him there and when you have a plan nothing can go wrong. Right? Right. When you have a solid plan and a marriage that's on paper only there's no risk of feelings getting involved. Not on Rozanov's part and certainly not on Shane's.
Right???
