Summary
It is a rare evening when Essek does not have any visitors. Tonight, he has time to rest, and to rouse himself early enough to watch the dawn break. Early enough to catch sight of a familiar head of rough red hair in the window across the street. Early enough that the rest of the world is still asleep, and Essek can be only Essek.
He raises his hand, waving bashfully. “Good morning.”

Summary
THELYSS: I think I could have floated beside him in stasis forever, ignoring the obvious. Once he offered the precise object of my desire, which I had been concealing from even myself, I panicked.
INTERVIEWER: And what did you say to him?
THELYSS: We fought about it. We had to. In the Nein, it is prerequisite for doing anything.
WIDOGAST: In the end, it was about fear, as it always is.
— The Mighty Nein's rocket to fame involves more drama, mystery, abuse, sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll than any columnist can resist, but media accounts until now have been mostly secondhand. Tabloids and vultures run with the facts in the opposite direction, smearing half-truths and outrageous accusations onto any blank space, taking silence for admission.
It definitely doesn’t help that Thelyss admitted to stealing the Mouthpiece of the Luxon on national telellusion.
The following timeline contextualizes Widogast and Thelyss’s individual music careers, their collaborations, and the events surrounding a) the crimes of Volstrucker Records CEO Trent Ikithon, and b) Ikithon and Martinet Ludinus Da’leth’s undiscussed roles in the Mouthpiece of the Luxon Scandal.

“Ah, dove,” said the umavi, using the Old Drow word for dove that also meant dear, also meant, less flatteringly, game pigeon. As a child, Essek had found the very existence of a word for a surface bird in Old Drow amusing, perplexing, until Deirta had informed him that in her youth the high houses had reared doves by hand in the Underdark, and fed them to their matriarchs. “What is to be done about you?”
-Essek has always been hungry. It is fitting then, that hungry is how he will die.

“Grab a pillow for your neck.” Verin replied as he tossed his pants and small clothes aside, sitting up on his knees. “Please.” It was added after Zathael sent him a glare. Sapphire flushed to navy as Zathael understood what Verin wanted, quickly grabbing hold of a pillow to settle beneath his head and neck for support, a rumble of a purr coming from him as Verin scooted closer on his knees. “Good boy,” he praised, shifting to straddle Zathael’s shoulders first. “Remember how this works?

Summary
Caleb moves closer into his space and holds his shivering arms tightly, and rubs some warmth into his shoulders. “Essek, you can feel it, can’t you?”
Caleb noticed it as he left the cottage, once he consciously felt for the sensation. Or rather, a lack thereof. Typically, magic rushes around him like the wind itself, or an ambient scent, or music. It appeals to a different and entirely unnamable sense though, of course. He can feel it, touch it, and manipulate it. It is so constant that it becomes subconscious and beyond notice.
“You can feel it, Essek. It is gone.”Peace is a precious thing, and a fragile thing too. When the unexpected finally strikes Essek's delicate new life, he and Caleb are left adrift and alone and very, very, vulnerable. What are two wizards without magic to do?

Summary
Crushed under the pressure of expectation, perfect son and perfect student Essek Thelyss has turned to an unusual outlet for letting off steam: selling drugs. A chance encounter in the course of his work brings him into the orbit of 'The Mighty Nein,' a group of misfits just as fucked up as he is, including his longtime academic rival, Caleb Widogast.
Friends are a foreign concept to Essek, but these weirdos are prepared to give him a crash course, and just in time. As Essek begins digging himself deeper into the criminal underworld of their small hometown, the Mighty Nein may be the only ones who can pull him back out.
