"and they were roommates" - a modern Westeros reincarnation AU

An excerpt from "Evidence of Affection" by Dr Baelor Targarran

Finally, I owe a debt to Duncan and Baelor themselves.
Like all historians, I have spent years in conversation with the dead. Rarely have I encountered two voices that have managed to reach across the centuries with such clarity, humour, honesty, and unwavering devotion. Whatever language we choose to describe the bond they shared, it is clear that it has left an indelible mark upon the history of Westeros. It has certainly left one on me, and it is my hope that it will leave one with you as well.

At Ashford Meadow, instead of entering the lists, Dunk chooses to invoke an ancient rite. In the Riverlands, it's known as the Pledge to the Mother. In the Stormlands, it’s the Smith’s Bargain, or at times, the Smith’s Folly.

Smallfolk everywhere call it a Bitching Tourney.

"Apologies, Lord Lannister," Ser Duncan says, his voice steady, tone stern. Aerion has to, embarrassingly enough, go on his tiptoes to catch a look at his profile, and his face seems confident, not at all intimidated by the annoyed gaze Lannister throws him. "Prince Maekar was very clear that no one was to touch Prince Aerion without his explicit consent."

Lord Lannister makes a complicated face, as if he can't quite understand the words out of Ser Duncan's mouth. "Pardon me? No, Prince Maekar wants his son wed within the year. All of the Seven Kingdoms has heard it by now. If he expects no one to touch him, he might as well lock him in his chambers and lose the key!"

Aerion steps forward as white-hot anger flashes in his veins; he moves, intending to beat this puny little lord's insolence to a bloody pulp, but Ser Duncan throws an arm out and forcibly shoves Aerion back behind him, a warning growl on his lips.

Lord Lannister freezes. Aerion freezes. Ser Duncan stays relaxed.

In the dark, sometimes, he imagined it. Some boy or girl like him, soot-winged, alone. How their hand might feel in his, their wings curved over his head. For once not the largest thing in the room. For once, his body just the right size.

    Summary

From the time of the Andals arrival in Westeros, and the beginning of knighthood in the kingdoms, it is a well-kept tradition for knights to not only swear their oath to the seven, but to preserve a record of the great feats of their own master and his predecessors by way of adding in lines. As such, the lineage of knight to squire is preserved through the memorization and passing of these vows, and while the words are kept secret from all but their own cohort, knights who share the same oathkeeping lineage...

... There are only a handful of famed chivalric lineages that are confirmed to still exist today, most notable amongst them is the oath taken by the Dragonknight Ser Aemon Targaryen, currently preserved by his three known squires, King Daeron Targaryen the Second, his son Prince Baelor Targaryen, and Ser Robyn Rhysling. As with most lineages, it is likely there are other knights within the cohort , but those names have since been lost to time.
