Killua stares at his dæmon.
In a distant part of his mind, he’d known she was close to Settling. Puberty has already caused Killua to shoot up a few inches past Gon and outgrow the clothes he’d packed after leaving home. Both of their voices were deepening and Killua would be lying if he hadn’t admired Gon’s growing muscles over the past few weeks. Things were changing and that was normal, even if life felt anything but recently.
Yet despite all that, he had avoided thinking about Ariney Settling.

Summary
Killua’s not sure why gazing at Gon causes a bittersweet pang in his chest.
He knows part of it is longing. He wants to be with Gon and his dæmon forever, to stay by their side and watch over them while they rest. He wants to protect them and grow with them. He wants to brush the hair out of Gon’s face and lay close enough that he can feel his body warmth. It’s all he can do to keep himself from reaching out and doing just that.
But all this wanting—is it normal to have these feelings for a friend?

“Fine. Don’t apologize,” Gon's dæmon says. “But we need to at least get Ariney back. And you better think twice before using Killua and Ariney as springboards for finding Ging and Katyin again.”
Gon wrinkles his nose. “I didn’t want to use Killua and Ariney like that. There was just no other option.”
"Yeah, well, the next time there’s ‘no other option’, it had better be for a better cause than achieving your goals, Gon. I don’t want to lose them just because you were blinded by ambition.”
Gon huffs. 'That’s kind of rich, coming from my own soul.'
'That’s exactly why I’m saying it. I know you best. And I know how much it would hurt for us to lose our only friends.'

“Did—Did you just call my soul pretty?”
“Yeah? Why, is that a problem?”
Killua opens his eyes again. Gon is still staring at him, gold eyes wide and innocent. Killua knows what he’s doing and he scowls at his best friend.
“You’re just saying that to rile me up. You can’t call another person’s soul pretty, that’s—that’s ridiculous!”
Gon shrugs. “Guess I’m ridiculous then.”
Killua sputters. There’s no logic in Gon’s thinking—he doesn’t think there ever has been—but there’s an honesty and a truth in it that makes Killua’s breath catch in his throat.
What does Gon really mean, when he compliments Killua's dæmon like that? What is he implying, if anything at all?
