The Doctor (and co) struggle with human* (and alien) concepts of gender bc their only gender is "idiot" (as confirmed in the kinda episode though it wasn't saying anything we didn't already know)
*specifically British/US ones bc that's where most of the human companions are from and where most of the show takes place and also because I don't know enough about other cultures' gender views to write about them accurately

She shot a look of her own back to Josh that she hoped conveyed "What are we doing here?" but he returned only a signature sparkling Josh smile. It was no coincidence that the first time she'd seen that smile, it was at the prospect of stealing a falcon. And she really couldn't be blamed for the fact that every time she saw it she just had to go along with whatever scheme he was planning.
Well, it was a good job her moral compass was not static at all and entirely changeable depending on the situation.
"So what was it, y'know, that you wanted us to do?" she asked. The first email that she and Josh had received was unsigned, no subject, just detailing something to do with a "scheme" that needed someone of their "talents", and an address. Oh, and it was all in caps. Upon following up, the only response they got was the aforementioned invitation to a “business meeting”. The red flags were numerous, not least how this person had procured Josh's email address and also why they had chosen to communicate via email of all things. Unfortunately, Josh had an extreme case of colourblindess when it came to metaphorical flags, and even less fortunately, Katrina had an extreme case of weakness to Josh's winning smile.

Lucy can take care of herself, despite how frequently her kindness cost her. Her brother looks like a strong wind would bowl him over. He'll probably keel over on the way there, if he doesn't get shot ten steps from the entrance.
But if that's what he wants.
"North of here. Think they've got a camp in the foothills."
"Great," says Norm. "Thanks."
And—
Maybe it's his own fault, for not having expected it, that Norm had that gun pointed at him— but between one moment and the next he's aimed it not at the Ghoul's sternum but the cratered flesh of his shoulder, pain blooming around the site of the bullet's entrance. It takes him entirely by surprise.
It's enough to send him briefly to his knees, the ground stiff and unforgiving beneath him. The shock unbalances him; Norm makes it worse when he slams the butt-end of the pistol against the Ghoul's temple.
He topples over.
Norm's face peaks into his suddenly quite blurry line of vision. "I'd say I'm sorry, but I'm not, really. My sister's a lot nicer than I am."
