Summary
Varian's lab has temperature adjustment. It was one of the first things he invented to install in his lab, since certain chemicals must be stored at certain temperatures.
The formula he was creating for the black rocks was one of those chemicals. It must be stored in extreme cold to avoid reacting with it's container.
Varian, in his panic, forgot to turn up the heating when he returned. With a blizzard raging outside, his fate was inevitable.

Just like the ATLAS, he and Light were destined to burn. He knew this. He knew it. It was only logical.
People like Light didn’t stay with people like him. Soon they would become asynchronous again, tracing individual orbits that would never meet.

The characterization of both L and Light is beautiful and there are many space/science metaphors for feelings that satisfy me immensely. Misa is an mvp here, and L and Light are clueless pining idiot geniuses. L's loneliness especially is depicted so...one of the best death note fics I've read for sure.
