Sam rose without thinking. He hated that he did, but the word home had woken up the last coiled hope inside him.
Barnes turned and moved away. He didn’t look back, didn’t slow. No request to follow.
Sam just stood there with his bag slung over his shoulder, frozen to the spot; every muscle caught between bolting and advancing.

Summary
Bucky Barnes has a lot to contend with in the 21st century. One difficult task after another is laid out in front of him: managing his new found freedom, attending therapy and working through his trauma. It's a struggle, but recovery is not a straight line, as his therapist so often likes to remind him.
He has to navigate this friendship / relationship / whatever it is with Sam all the while managing his guilt and shame for his years as the Winter Soldier, and his grief over Steve's death. Then of course there’s these new super soldiers that have appeared out of nowhere that have to be dealt with, along with the frustrating inclusion of new faces, like Walker, and the familiar, like Zemo.
And then there is another task, one that sometimes seems to be the most difficult task of all: learning to be kind to his past self.
Rewrite / fix it of TFATWS – you do not need to read the other parts of this series, this works as a standalone. Pre TFATWS to about three months after the series ends. Not just a rehash of the TV series, I like to bounce off canon and do my own thing. I generally update fortnightly.

Bucky Barnes is a NASCAR driver at the top of his game. He has a month to go before the chase for the championship, and when he's asked to do a sponsorship event halfway across the country, he figures he might as well drive there. He can count on himself to be fast. What he doesn't count on is a storm, a breakdown, and a friendly (and hunky..?) mechanic called Sam Wilson who repairs his car while he's stranded in a small town.

“You’re gonna propose? Buck, that’s such great news, I’m so—“ Steve stops mid-word, his joy turning to baffled rage. “Wait, who did you tell before me? If you told Natasha before me, I’m gonna—”
“Jesus, calm down, you’re still at the top of the friend hierarchy,” says Bucky, rolling his eyes. “Uh. I may have told, um, my beehive. And the crows.”
When Bucky tells the crows about his proposal plans, he isn't expecting it to entangle him in a crow criminal conspiracy of jewelry and jewel thefts. Now if Bucky wants to pull off a successful proposal without accidentally becoming a supervillain leader of a crew of criminal crows, he's got to figure out where the hell these jewels came from and return them. And if that wasn't enough, he's got to figure out how to propose to Sam too, preferably without him finding out about said crew of criminal crows.

“We brought you this small human in what we believe is the traditional manner. It needs human care,” says one of the storks.
The birds of New York and beyond are absolutely certain that Bucky and Sam are extremely dad-shaped, and they'll bring them a baby to prove it. Sam and Bucky are somewhat less certain, but they're working on it.
