“You need to stop doing this to yourself, Simon...” Soap said, pity evident in his eyes.
“What’s the worst that could happen?” Ghost replied, taking another long sip of the golden liquid.
“You could die?” He offered back.
“Oh Johnny,” he knocked back the rest of the drink then placed the glass back on his desk and turned to him. “That’s the best thing that could happen...”
A pained smile settled on his scarred lips, “...because at least I’d be with you again.”

Isn't it funny, how we two have almost got each other fooled?
I say almost, because... really, it's just almost. There are the gaps between our ignorance that paint us so painstakingly, that draw out those hues of grossly undeserved clarity. We're constantly dancing away from that particular brush, because, really, we're just almost blank canvases, and couldn't we almost stay that way for just once?-
Johnny knows they're in love. He also knows they can't be.

Summary
Just last week the man had been as happy as he could be; as kind as he could ever be. He had smiled so sweetly at him, his teeth had shown through by accident. They had been hiking in the forest by the base, but they settled by a small little pond. They sat together, talking about nothing. They were both half listening to one another. They both just liked to be around the other. The sun hit Johnny perfectly. It illuminated his features and made them seem so much more perfect, so extraordinary.
Simon wanted to hold the memory in his hands and cradle it. He wanted to live it again and again. He needed something, anything, to keep him grounded to the earth. He felt himself falling. Not only falling out of orbit, but falling into Johnny's orbit.

John had recently passed from a mission. Simon has a letter addressed to him from John.
Angst happens.

“Your notebook, Johnny,” Ghost asked, eyes fixed on the small, leather-bound book Soap cradled protectively to his chest, “may I see it?”
“When I die,” Soap replied evenly, never breaking eye contact, emphasis on the ‘when’ because the certainty of death looming over every life on earth hung even heavier over their heads, “you can have it. Whatever I’ll have left by then—it’s yours.”
And Ghost had let the matter rest after that, unwilling to step past a line so clearly drawn, ROE never in doubt.

Summary
Simon wakes groggy and confused in an unfamiliar hospital, thinking he's witnessed Johnny's death. He's devastated and angry and no one has time to explain, except Johnny himself.
As Simon grapples with what he's been through and a reality in which he somehow gets what he never believed he deserved, Johnny remains a warm, solid presence beside him, guiding him.Or, Simon was tortured into believing Johnny had been killed and Johnny puts all of his beating heart into reminding him that they are both alive and that he isn't going anywhere, no matter what they face.

From the takedown of Hassan, Ghost had saved Soap's life. They had endured hell together during the mission, now that it was all over, Ghost still couldn't get his mind off of Johnny. Unknown feelings had started to take over him, with his confusion and the reluctant life he had settled into, he was desperate to keep the division between him and his sergeant.
