“Well, how does he know you love him?”
Neil scoffed. Love was such a trivial word. Meant for greeting cards and hallmark movies. A platitude to round out an apology, or to spice up a declarative speech. It was nothing. His and Andrew's relationship was beyond such trivial and mundane classifications such as love or no love, but on some level, Neil knew it was also not inaccurate. He wouldn't admit that though, how embarrassing.
“It’s Andrew, Matt. He just- he just knows.”AKA I was listening to the enchanted soundtrack and got brainrot over neil trying to woo andrew with "that's how you know" type shenanigans

Summary
Neils eyes were locked onto the screen. He was fully captured by the sights and sounds. He put a few pieces of popcorn in his mouth absentmindedly, not tearing his eyes away from the screen in front of him. He leaned forward, pulling on the blanket draped across them both, taking in the scene change with rapturous attention.

It had never been on purpose that his and Neil's relationship was a secret. It's not his fault that Aaron was as dense as a brick wall. His brother was gifted in many things, mainly in maintaining an unrivaled level of stupidity. It had been three months on the dot, and Aaron remained completely oblivious. If it wasn't so goddamn annoying Andrew would find it funny.

Summary
It never really helped, he thought. It calmed him down for an hour, a day maybe. But it was addicting. The rush, the crash, the wind-up. Everything about it was intoxicating.
Andrew was fucked up, he knew that. For once in his life, he finally had things to hold onto and yet, still, he was tearing himself to shreds to be able to make it through the day. Like he was a fucking teenager again. Shouldn't he have grown out of this by now?

Steve squeezed his eyes shut. They felt tender and bruised like an apple dropped on the ground, soft to the touch and ever visible beneath the darkened flesh. The muscles in his jaw, his temple, his forehead, they all ached. Tension stretched his skin thin like a day-old sunburn.
He didn't fucking have time for this.
With a deep breath, he opened them. Sunlight accosted him, sending a pulsing awareness through his skull.
Where were his fucking sunglasses?

Summary
Andrew wasn’t upset.
He wasn’t. He was drowning on dry land, Neil's eyes pushing his head even further down into the surf. The weight of his concern was a palpable presence squeezing the air from his lungs and pulling his skin thinner with every passing second.
“I am a waste of your time,” he responded.

Summary
Andrew was pretty sure kissing Neil Josten was the best thing in the world. The soft push and slide of their mouths. The fast and heady press of their lips. The quick and the long minutes stolen in empty classrooms or appreciated in locked bedrooms. All of it was good. Andrew had had a lot of time to memorize the feel of it. Work out every way to get Neil to sigh just so. It was perfect. As much as a thing could be.

Summary
“Andrew?” Neil had asked, suddenly pausing his entire body, his bag flying forward with the momentum of his movement and the papers in his hands nearly flying away from him with it too.
“Neil.” he’d replied coolly, even as his internal workings screamed NEIL! JOSTEN! at him a thousand times over, their every interaction playing on a film screen in his memory.

Summary
“Neil?”
“I’m sorry.” Andrew scoffed above him before removing himself completely from Neil's body. Neil felt the bed sink next to him, Andrew staying close by.
“Don’t.” Neil sucked in a breath. He felt lightheaded, lost in his own mind.
“I’m fine,” he said into the thick air of the room. Andrew didn't respond, instead sucking in his own breath. Yeah, he thought bitterly, they were about to have one of those conversations.

“Should we just keep driving?”
Andrew paused. He still didn't visibly react much but Neil was in tune with him enough to tell he was thinking about it. He waited. After a second, Andrew responded, speaking quietly into the comfortable silence.
“Just a little longer.”
Neil nodded. He stretched his arm out, leaving his hand open should Andrew be interested in taking it, offering the comfort only if it was wanted. Andrew flicked his eyes to where it was resting on the center console, considered, and then reached out over to tangle their fingers. Neil hummed, content, and let his eyes drift shut.

Summary
He’d never thought he'd miss it. The building wasn’t new. He’d spent five years living in it. Surviving in it. But now, with less than 24 hours left within the high walls, he couldn't help but look at it completely differently.
It was no stranger to Andrew to walk away from a living place and feel like a piece of him was being left inside. He knew heartbreak. He knew what it was like to leave somewhere for the last time and know you would never get back the person you were when you walked through the door. In fact, most places he'd lived had broken away a chunk of him. They all tore at his skin, clawed at his soul, and crumbled his defenses until they could no longer be broken.

“Is that why you said my name?” Neil frowned. Was it? He didn’t think so but he couldn’t remember. Until he looked at Andrew's eyes again. Colors!
“I’ve decided I like colors!” Neil smiled. He had something he liked! Something good in the world that was not Exy related and he was alive and he could tell Andrew about it! That was special.

Summary
“Stay.”
Neil almost laughed. This was the word that had always been tethering him to the earth but he had a flight to catch and Andrew knew it. This was goodbye.
“I can’t.”
“You can.” The hand squeezed his. “Change your flight. Practice doesn’t start until Monday.” And just like that, Neil's tensions rushed out of him. Andrew wanted him for the weekend. Even if it only gave them one more day-

Neil Abram Josten was nothing. He knew this. At the core of his being, he knew his life didn’t mean anything. To himself sure, he had goals and dreams and wants. But further than that? He was nothing. Or, on the off chance, he was something, he was a problem.
