Hannibal's lips are moving, the words are coming out, he is lecturing but he is outside of himself, he recognises it clinically as disassociation. He is speaking about love on the battlefield and he feels numb. His heart is on the floor of a kitchen. There is blood on his curved knife.
The expanse of Will's skin smiles back at him.

Hannibal leaves Baltimore post Mizumono but without Bedelia, he is living in Vienna working as a classics professor and not coping as well as he hoped when he is brazenly attacked and hospitalised. Will is listed in his mostly empty burner phone as his emergency contact. Will he decide to come to Hannibal's bedside half way across the world? Or is the pain that Hannibal has caused still too fresh?

The image that barges its way through Hannibal’s mind is not one of the present, but rather a reflection behind a long bolted shut door. Will, pale, mute, and wounded, looks an awful lot like Hannibal did at age thirteen.
Or: Post-fall, the severity of Will’s injuries renders him temporarily mute. Hannibal is forced to confront his past.
