Summary
Slowly, like he was lifting something precious and delicate, Jasper brought her wrist to his lips. His mouth brushed across the thin skin where her forearm met her palm.
When his lips parted, anxiety rushed through her, a pulsing current that raced through her veins.
“Mallory, don’t worry,” he murmured. “You trust me, don’t you?”
He pressed his lips to her, a cool kiss. Where his teeth grazed her skin, it burned softly.
“Just a drop,” he whispered, his voice huskier than before. She wondered if he said it to reassure her, or to convince himself.
Mallory watched as he took her wrist between his teeth and, with the lightest pressure, bit down to break the skin. She didn’t even see the blood—his tongue rushed to lap it up.
Jasper looked up, his red eyes glowing in the moonlight. Swimming with her blood, she realized. For some reason, she didn’t feel afraid.
“Perfect,” he said lowly, almost reverently. “I knew you would be.”
At that, a heat mixed with the strange calmness in her core, feelings she didn’t understand.
“And now to draw the venom out,” he said. “Because I’m keeping you around, just like this, for a long, long time.”
