    Summary

At the cottage, when Ilya suggested he could marry Svetlana, Shane said "Don't marry Svetlana. Marry me. Here. Next summer."

Canon rewrite where I completely rewrite the Long Game because I didn't like it. Instead, Ilya and Shane remain playing for Montreal and Boston, dating in secret, slowly coming out to friends and family on their own terms. After getting married, they finally feel safe to come out to their teams. Montreal reacts badly, but instead of making himself smaller, Shane realizes that he would never be enough for them. So, he decides Montreal can get fucked and he's coming out out of spite. Ilya is ecstatic.

I remain faithful to these complex characters and the reality of the world they live in while also allowing Shane the time and space to realize that his love for both Ilya and hockey are all that matter and the consequences are not so important.

    Summary

LeClaire’s hand is still on his shoulder, and Ilya knows that it doesn’t look like anything. A coach speaking to one of his players. LeClaire’s heat seeps through his suit jacket, and his breath is a warm, damp wash of air against Ilya’s ear.

“They’ve finished up with the awards,” he murmurs. “You look like you’re ready to get out of here.”

Ilya nods tightly and sets his drink down on the table.

    OR:

Gregori Rozanov was bad in many ways, but Coach LeClaire might have him beat.

Shane Hollander has something to say about that. It turns out a lot of people do.

    Summary

"We're setting you up with a billet situation," Fletcher continued. "It's pretty common for first-year players, especially international guys. Gives you a chance to settle in, learn the city, have someone looking out for you."

"Okay," Ilya said slowly, not entirely sure what a billet was, but not wanting to admit his ignorance.

He could guess from the context – he’d heard of rookies being assigned to live with older single players, veterans who could show them the ropes. Maybe that was what Fletcher meant. Connors maybe, he was probably a handful of years older than Ilya. Or perhaps Becker. Ilya just hoped it was someone who–

"You'll be staying with Nikolai Petrov and his family."

The words hit Ilya like a punch to the gut. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

"Petrov?" he managed, his voice coming out strangled.

The Bears decide that Ilya should be set up with a billet for his first season. The idea of spending a year living with a man that Ilya is sure hates him is completely terrifying. And yet, it ends up being the best thing to ever happen to him.

Pure angst and found family feels dialled to a 1000. Ilya-centric feat. trauma and its semi-resolution, background Ilya/Shane. Fantastic.
