She ashes the end of her cigarette. Her eyes trace over his shoulders, creep up his neck. The curve of his jaw and his sharp chin, the way his lips neatly fold around the cigarette. His dark forest colored eyes are unreadable. She finds herself wondering what he thinks about when they smoke together. Sometimes she longs to crawl inside his skull– to see his inner workings. She knows that winds him up and ticks him off; she thinks that she knows what moves him. He’ll never say it, but she knows he gets a kick out of her. If not, he wouldn’t be here.
It’s taken years for her to learn how to read him. Megumi doesn’t really smile, not frequently, but he’s amused by far more than he lets on. The slight curve of his lips when she makes a joke or a clever observation. He likes smoking with her. He likes her.

Yuuta fidgets awkwardly and shakes his head. Toge smirks and begins to sign.
You’re being assigned babysitting duty.
“Is this some kind of joke?” Maki sneers. Who the hell needs babysitting?
“Eh… So, Kugisaki-chan got injured on her last mission.”
Maki’s body stiffens at the mention of Nobara. She hasn’t seen her in a handful of months, though it really feels like years at this point. It might as well be.
“Shoko can heal her then. I’m not taking care of a grown adult.”
Shoko can’t heal her. And you won’t be taking care of Nobara. Toge grins, and Maki’s heart pounds in response.
“No—you can’t expect me to go babysit my ex-girlfriend’s kid.”
