“Steve, I gotta go,” Bucky said, grabbing his work backpack and double-checking he had everything.
After giving Sarah her cereal and milk, Steve walked over to his husband. “Make Alexander Pierce’s life hell, baby,” he said, kissing Bucky much to their son’s displeasure.
“Decidedly not doing that,” Bucky responded, trying to push away.
Steve held on. “Hey, happy birthday,” he whispered, resting their foreheads together.

Summary
Bucky wants kids, Steve doesn't. It's as simple as that. As hard as it is, as much as he doesn't want to, Steve walks out of Bucky's life.
Years later, when Steve finds himself in the same park as Bucky and his two toddlers, he asks Bucky if he can sit. Bucky, a certified heartbroken idiot, asks him if he wants to get a coffee instead. Thus begins the slow reintegration of their lives
